Corus 2010 Line-Up Announced

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sun, 10/18/2009 at 8:14am.

The organisers of the annual Corus Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee in the Netherlands have announced the full line-ups for the A and B Groups in next year's event, which runs from 15-31 January.

Five of the current top ten rated players will feature, including world champion Vishy Anand (pictured), former champion Vladimir Kramnik, and hot-to-trot Norwegian wunderkid "Magnum-Force" Magnus Carlsen

Also packing their long johns and booking their tickets for Wijk in January are Hikaru Nakamura, Alexei Shirov and last year's winner Sergey Karjakin.

Fabiano Caruana is promoted to the A group after earning his place by winning the B Group last year.  Despite just missing out on victory in the B Group last year after leading for most of the event, Nigel Short is also let loose on the big guns in the A Group this time.

As usual, the B Group is a strong tournament in its own right, headed by Ni Hua of China and featuring lots of young talent in the form of David Howell, Anish Giri, Parimarjan Negi and last year's C Group winner, Wesley So.

Corus's going to be very exciting with lots of intrigues: how will Carlsen fare against the renowned champions; Naka's performance; Carlsen vs Karjakin vs Caruana, etc.

And in the B section I will probably be rooting for my team member and good friend Anya Muzychuk. Smile

I'm glad to see Short got through. I'm not sure he can win, but he is definitely capable of beating anybody in the group.

GO SHORTIE!!

Too many good players are missing in this event like Adams, Aronian, Polgar and Topalov. I don´t understand most of the players that had instead been nominated:-(

I think topalov is scared out of his wit to feature here. He is afraid that by doing so badly here will affect his preparation against Anand.

My countryman Leinier will give a good colour to the tournament because he's a warrior and he has a good level. He won't be favourite, of course, but he can made some miracles.

I would not expect much from Anand given his upcoming BIG match with Topalov. If anything, he would probably look to glean something out of his opponents' preperation.

I wonder what Anand would play in response to d4? Slav? Gruenfeld? QGD?
