Current & Upcoming Events

Submitted by SonofPearl on Wed, 02/03/2010 at 12:07pm.

If you're missing the frenzy of chess coverage spawned by the recent Corus tournament, then fear not!  More high-level chess events are currently on-going and even more are on the way soon.

The Gibtelecom Masters is nearing it's climax in Gibraltar, with the quality of the official website matching the quality of the chess on display.

The Moscow Open is another strong event currently in full swing in err...Moscow.  The games began on 30 January and will finish on 7 February in this big open event featuring joint top seeds Sergei Rublevsky and Alexander Motylev (2697 Elo).

Unfortunately the official site is not as polished, and is currently not even working, but hopefully will be back up soon.

In the coming soon department, we have the giant Aeroflot Open (9-17 February), also in Moscow, which also has a blitz qualification tournament for the world blitz championship in November tagged on at the end after the closing ceremony.

Last but most definitely not least is the 'Wimbledon of Chess", Linares from 12-25 February. The official website is not yet updated from last year, but I understand that the players in this year's event are:

 Veselin Topalov
 Levon Aronian
 Alexander Grischuk
 Francisco Vallejo Pons
 Boris Gelfand
 Vugar Gashimov

I agree with  Muhammad333. Go Gashimov. He will dominate the whole tournament. He's great!!!

The website coverage for Corus 2010 was amazing, they really had everything covered perfectly.  I particularly enjoyed the live commentary and analysis on the big games each day, very useful.  Bit disappointed that Carlsen is cancelled from Linares, was hoping to see him in action against Topalov, but that's life.  Does anyone know if Carlsen pulled out of Linares, or if he was 'axed' by the tournament organisers? (Perhaps Topalov didn't fancy going head to head with Carlsen before the World Championship match, and various strings were pulled??)  For anyone that missed it, check out the Carlsen v. Kramnik match from Corus 2010 round 9...a deserving win for Kramnik: http://www.coruschess.com/gameanalysis.php?year=2010&game=9

On the other hand Grischuk is in very good shape. It will be between Aronian and Grischuk.

Topalov, Aronian, Gelfand and Gashimov are very top players. Unfortunately each of them are currently at bad shape. So itś difficult to say who can win. I expect Aronian could be the best.

And if Linares is the Wimbledon of chess, where is the Federrer of chess - Carlsen?

Linares is a double round-robin tournament, so six players = 10 rounds.

Only 6 players at Linares? That's disappointing.

I didn't realize Linares had so few players.  I expect Gelfand, Aronian and Topolav will destroy the other three with Aronian or Gelfand on top.
