Dortmund Round 3

Shock result as Naiditsch beats Kramnik

Only one decisive result in the 3rd round - but a real shocker as Arkadij Naiditsch (pictured) beat Vladimir Kramnik in fantastic style!  Despite Kramnik choosing the super-solid Petroff defence, Naiditsch played a strong novelty with the stunning rook sacrifice 19. Qd2!!

Kramnik sunk deep into thought for 45 minutes, but couldn't find a way to meet this brilliant new idea.  He refused the Rook, but soon lost his Queen for a Rook and Knight and Naiditsch, playing quickly and confidently won easily on move 42.  Wow! Surprised The game is below with brief comments in the move-list.

All other games were uneventful draws in 19, 27 and 31 moves.

The results in round 3:

Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar - Gustafsson, Jan ½-½ 27 D43 Anti-Meran Gambit

19. Qd2 also sets up the nice trap (if black were to fall that way) 19... Qxe5 20. Qb4+ Kg8 21. Ne7+ Kf8 22. Nc6+ and the knight takes the queen next move. After Qd2, the tactics simply fall white's way, which is a huge factor in how black has to play the rest of the game. Black is completely defensive at this point.

After 19. Qd2!! the queen can check on b4 after black queen capture the white rook on e5 and at the same time it is attacking the knight on f4!

Best for Black is 19...QxR 20 Qb4+ Ke8 21 Re1 Ne2+ 22 Kf1 Rc8! 23 f4 Qxd5 24 Rxe2+ Kd7 25 Rd2 Rc5 26 Rxd5+ Rxd5 with a probable draw.

I think its because if black queen takes the rook, white has Qb4+ which can set up some nice play.

In Kramnik's game, I don't understand how 19.Qd2 is such a brilliant move. Anyone care to explain?
