Dortmund Round 3

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sun, 07/05/2009 at 12:01am.

The much anticipated clash between Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik failed to deliver any excitement in round 3 at Dortmund, being drawn in a mere 19 moves.

Kramnik seemed to surprise Carlsen in the opening and he quickly resorted to a repetition of moves.

Unfortunately, the other games were also damp squibs as Bacrot v Jakovenko and Naiditsch v Leko were also drawn in 22 and 29 moves respectively.

So far Dortmund hasn't provided much excitement for chess fans.  Let's hope that changes soon.

The standings after round 3:

Carlsen, Magnus   NOR   2772 2
Kramnik, Vladimir  RUS  2759
Leko, Peter  HUN  2756
Bacrot, Etienne  FRA  2721
Jakovenko, Dmitry  RUS  2760
Naiditsch, Arkadij  GER  2697 1

when he was going to play anand for the world championship it was hyped as the battle of natural mind vs computer one.

i know Carlsen did that time- but usually it is Kramnik

Quite disappointing indeed, but for Carlsen's defense, it seems (according to Rybka) that drawing was the best thing he could do.

This kind of round makes me like shogi more than chess as they almost never have drawn game...

Why are you guys blaming Kramnik? It was Carlsen who forced the draw.

Where do you take from that Kramnik is the biggest computer user? in EVERY apect of the game?

Also, note that in this game, it was Carlsen who forced the draw, not Kramnik.

Kramnik is, in my opinion, the worst player in the top 20. not because of talent...but because i do NOT want to see someone play for a draw. He plays for the draw with black and win with white- never straying from his Catalan opening.  Also, i note that he is the biggest user of computers in the game- abother thing i am not an admirer of. Yes i know that they are vital and i do use them, but not for EVERY aspect of the game!

Looks like Kramnik was on to something when Magnus found the safety valve.

poor top players of the world class chess, without willingness to upset the other... hehhehe LOL, they should play chess in Cubao, Quezon city under the overpass pedestrian concrete, sometimes being annoyed by the onlookers...

I think these top players should step aside and let us amateurs participate in the top tournaments and provide some fireworks.
