Dresden Olympiad Coverage

Submitted by SonofPearl on Wed, 11/12/2008 at 11:51am.

Wherever you are from, it's very likely that among the 150+ chess teams descending on Dresden now, there is one representing YOUR country at the 2008 Olympiad.

The official site promises a dedicated TV channel and full details of the results during the event should be available at the chess-results server, from which the lists of the top 30 teams in the Open and Women's events given below are gathered.

The TV channel requires users to download software and give a valid email address to register.  At present it's showing a video montage of the city of Dresden, but hopefully it will have some chess content soon!

Of course, you can also get the results and up-to-date reports right here at Chess.com! Smile

The first round is at 3pm local time on Thursday 13th November and woe betide anyone who is even a minute late; a new rule in operation states that players must arrive promptly for their games or be defaulted.  Previously players could be up to 1 hour late.  I hope no-one parties too late after today's opening ceremony and sleeps late tomorrow!  Draw offers are also not permitted until move 30, so there should be fewer short draws.

Is anybody watching the TV channel now? I've never seen anything so bizarre - A Freddy Mercury Lookalike is singing the songs of queen whilst dancing on ice. Is this some kind of opening ceremony? Very, very strange, and not a little disturbing. Get on with the chess.

SonofPearl and Maxdose: The game is gonna be live! Check this out: http://www.dresden2008.de/site/en/media/press_work_informations/main.htm

It says "550 Games per Day, all live in the Internet available at www.dresden2008.org", Seems they just updated at midnight, how exciting!

I also wrote to the contact person of their website, he replied that the English version would be updated soon, including images, live games...just as Russians did in Nalchik. Let's enjoy all of them!

The games aren't going to be live, but delayed a couple of hours - focus will be on the import games

@chumbawamba: There will be a support/help/FAQ site online tomorrow

@SonofPearl: when you go to www.chessolympics.com you get to a page that seems to be updated live

fzweb - Australia has teams competing in the Open and Women's events - the lists above are only the top 30 rated teams! Smile

Redstrike - It doesn't look like there will be live games at the official site, but where would you start with so many games going on at once?! Cool  Some sites will have coverage of the bigger games, but all the important news will be available here at Chess.com.  The 'chess-results' website in the article is also a good source for the results of your favourite team - especially if they aren't among the leaders!
