Dundee Challenger - 2nd

Submitted by AMcHarg on Sun, 10/18/2009 at 2:37pm.

Hello

Didn't take my laptop with me so have not had an opportunity to post untill now.  I was playing in the Challenger and finished joint 2nd on 4/5 winning £70.  The first round I got a full point bye but on that night I played Stephen Hogg from the Open who also got a 1 point bye.  It was a graded game and I had a clearly won game but somehow I totally screwed it up and lost.  He actually offered a draw at one stage late on and I should have accepted; not sure why I didn't as he was probably winning by then.  I guess I was just so pissed off after throwing away a clearly 'won' game.  Games below:

I am happy to have done well in the other games and pull out some nice results.

Hi Andrew, excellent performance.  I know Stephen Hogg well, having played beside him in the same team for the last 3 seasons at SNCL.  He is well worth his current grade.  It's a shame that you didnt finish him off as the grading points would have been valuable.  I suspect that your dodgy opening gave him a misplaced sense of confidence, a frequent occurence with the late Jimmy Gordon's opponents.  I like your natural tactical style, it is a great strength, but at the top level you need to temper it with study.  Having said that it is obvious to me that you are getting there and I expect you to be playing and beating the Stephen Hoggs on a regular basis very soon.

Best wishes, Alan.

Thanks David

Steven played well; he might post some of his games at some stage.  He was too tired on Friday night after being up since 5:30am.  As a result he found it pretty difficult to concentrate and I think that was a defining factor in losing round 1; with respect to his opponent who played well to finish it off.

Well done Andrew, a very impressive set of results against quality opposition.  Congratulations also to Steven for a joint second place in the minor with 3.5 out of 5.
