Strong finish by Chadric in Inter-Province chess

THE Davao Chadric Builders finished a strong joint 3rd to 7th place in the tough 1st Vicente L. Pimentel Sr. Memorial Inter-Province Chess Team Championship, which ended Thursday in Tandag, Surigo del Sur.
Davao Chadric, bannered by National Master Alexander Lupian, Henry Lopez, Jimmy Dano, Dharim Bacus, and Samuel Yu, amassed 12 points after nine rounds in the tournament that drew 27 teams.
Davao Chadric, managed by Engineer Enrico Vanta of Chadric Builders and Construction Supply, was only two points behind Tagaytay and Rizal, which scored 14 points apiece. Tagaytay was declared the champion because of better tie-break points while Rizal second placer.
Also scoring 12 points were Bislig City-DPWH, Tandag Chess Circle B, Surigao del Sur B and Lanao Sur Achiever Team.
This was Chadric's best finish in three years of participation in the annual tournament, and Vanta was elated by the result.
"This is a good showing," said Vanta, who treated the players to a sumptuous lunch Friday upon their arrival from Tandag.
Tagaytay and Rizal each received P125,000 for their finish while the third to seventh finisher got P42,000 each.
The other Davao team, the Davao City Chess Team, finished a joint 10th 14th place in the company of South Cotabato, Compostela Valley Province, Cavite of Governor Ayong S. Maliksi and Misamis Oriental East.
The 1st Vicente L. Pimentel Sr. Memorial Inter-Province Chess Team Championship was sponsored by the Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Also backing the event were the Tandag Chess Circle Inc., Tandag Pacific Chess Club and Chess Enthusiast of Surigao del Sur.
