Everton Needs The Three Points

Submitted by BillyIdle on Tue, 10/20/2009 at 4:06pm.

Everton manager David Moyes admits the result is all that matters against Wolves at Goodison Park on Saturday.   Everton's Barclays Premier League season has been disrupted probably more than most as European commitments have meant they have often had to play on a Sunday.  After another international break, in which he has seen the likes of Tim Cahill and Lucas Neill travel to Australia, all Moyes is concerned about is winning.

Saturday is, in fact, their first Saturday 3pm kick-off of the campaign and Moyes is keen to extend a six-match unbeaten run - spoiled only by the home draw with Stoke immediately prior to the international break.

"Points are always important in the Premier League and we have to try to get three," he said.  "We failed against Stoke. I thought our performance was even better than at Portsmouth the week before (a 1-0 win).  "In truth I'm looking for a more consistent level of performance but I'll settle for playing badly again and taking the three points.

"The international breaks have become quite a difficult thing this year with one every month and another one coming up in November.  "I think the players are finding it very tough to be involved in international games and then come back to their club sides.  "They know they have got a big summer coming up and putting them through the football they are paid for with clubs sides and then playing internationals and then again at the end of the season you wonder where they get any time for themselves.  "There are a lot of games for these boys to play."

Moyes has also backed defenders Phil Jagielka, currently recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury, and Leighton Baines to make a late bid to be in Fabio Capello's England World Cup squad.  However, he thinks calls for youngster Jack Rodwell, who has impressed this season, to receive recognition are premature.

"There are potential opportunities, although I don't know about Jack Rodwell," said the Toffees boss.  "I think it may come too soon for him but in years to come there will be opportunities.  "The other two will have a real good chance if we pick up and get to the top of the league it will certainly bring to light the players at Everton.

"If we can get our act together I'm sure they will come to the fore."

Everton can play badly and still get the three points.  How does that work?
