fide logo big.gifFIDE recently announced the setting up of a Foundation for Modernisation, with the objective of:

"...reviewing the development of chess these last years, and proposing new processes, procedures, regulations, events rating systems, chess in schools and generally reviewing all aspects related to the modernisation of FIDE and the chess world".

Anyone wishing to contribute their ideas can use the suggestion page at the FIDE website, or simply email modernisation@fide.com

So why not sharpen your pencil, pour yourself a stiff drink and brainstorm some ideas.  When you've finished, send your ideas to FIDE and (if you want to) copy your submission below in the comments for discussion.

The official FIDE announcement can be found here.

In related news, the Russian chess website Chess-News reports FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as saying that separate official Rapid and Blitz ratings will be introduced from 1 January next year.  No official confirmation is available for this bombshell just yet*.

There should be more online tournaments using Paypal etc, people pay the entry fee, play till whoever gets to the final etc and wins prize money etc!

Lets bring Chess into 21st century! approx 600 million people play! i would like to enter more tournaments that way!

    First of all.
I have many ideas, but this ONE is most important:
Let's start to count win as 3 points, draw=1, lose=0.
Otherwise we will slowly kill ROYAL GAME.

But after this change - will be no more calculation, no more so called "grandmasters draws", but CHESS become more popular, more interesting with more sponsors - an excellent example was last London Classic 2010 (Carlsen lost 2 games, Anand/McShane - none, but Magnus finally won tournament !!) in my opinion the best event on the high level chess last year.

Second, less important: do rating system more dynamic, because motivation in chess plays very vital role specially between yong players.
I mean it should be online-like system. So everyone with FIDE rating will know his ACTUAL rating straight away after any event, perfectly at any time - Live Rating, so.

How about making a rule that the President must not consort with war criminals and despots?

Would they ignore our suggestions if we suggested that they held fair elections?

I will suggest to have a format where White's first move is chosen randomly, just as the clocks are started.  This is an alternative to Chess960/FischerRandom or other recent suggestions to reduce the importance of opening theory.  Instead of radically altering the game by changing the starting position or prohibiting castling before move 10, this approach simply makes deep opening preparation impractical.  Why spend days or weeks preparing the Gruenfeld only to sit down at the board and the TD plays 1.b3?  Can you imagine the likes of Kramnik compelled to play 1.g4?

Of course, you could reduce the set of candidate first moves to a reasonable set: e4, d4, c4, Nf3, b3, b4, g3, Nc3, etc.  It would still accomplish the same goal without allowing a bunch of Grob Openings.

I'm going to suggest an immediate merger with FIFA. I'm sure the excellent ethical standards and principled leadership of both will make for a remarkable combined organisation.

Blitz Rating - it will be excellent.

I think the way they combined classical and rapid chess for the candidates this year was dumb. I think the candidates process needs revision.

Rapid and blitz ratings at first sounded dumb but it's very interesting now that I think of it.. Would like to see Carlsen #1 in all 3.
