FINAL: Wednesday April 22
Everton 0 Chelsea 0
The game ended with Didier Drogba of Chelsea hitting the post to the right on Everton's goal in the 90th minute. A close shave! Tim Cahill had two close up chances earlier on. Shots on goal totaled Chelsea 23 and Everton 15. Chelsea took charge in the second half, but Everton came on strong in the final 10 minutes. Everton took 9 shots from inside the box during the game and Chelsea 11. Both teams had to call it a day at 0 - 0.
Fortunately, the Everton defense makes it very hard to score on them from the field. Everton can manage at least a 0 - 0 result even against the strongest teams, including Manchester United, Arsenal (1-1) and Chelsea. Arsenal got the tie only in injury time. Everton having beaten Liverpool once this season and they have shown up against the best teams. Add to that a 3-3 draw with Aston Villa who were behind 2-0, and Everton has drawn with or beaten every team ahead of them in the Premier League. That is not bad! They they let games slip against Aston Villa and Arsenal. They must have thought the game was in their pocket when 1-0 against Arsenal and let down in the minute last, while injury time was do or die time for Arsenal.
Everton needs to do some recruiting of young and speedy Brazilian players. What Everton lacks is an impact player on offense. As we say in America, they need "a go to guy", a break away sprinter. Maybe a track star with world class speed - what the Chicago Bears had in wide receiver Willie Gault when they won the Super Bowl. It is no secret to anyone that Everton must improve the offense to be a top team. If one of Cahill's shots had gone in from close range Everton would have looked great. They will meet Chelsea again in the FA Cup final. So it is literally back to the drawing board for manager David Moyes.
