Fischer Film In Pre-Production

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sat, 02/28/2009 at 8:04am.

Possible films about Bobby Fischer's life have been mooted for a long time, but following his death just over a year ago, the time is now ripe for it to happen at last.

Producer Damian Chapa is due to start filming an Amadeus Pictures biopic of Bobby Fischer next month.  The film is called 'Bobby Fischer Live' and will cover all aspects of the controversial champion's life.

Chapa will not only direct but also play the part of Fischer himself.  Filming is planned to take place in Los Angeles, New York, Russia and Iceland.  There is an official website for the movie, but other than a picture of Chapa as Fischer, it has few other details as yet.  Unfortunately, he looks nothing like Fischer whatsoever (see picture below)...

Chapa recently released the controversial Polanski Unauthorised, so is no stranger to making films about controversial real-life characters.  Let's hope the film has some realistic chess scenes, and a balanced portrayal of Fischer's flawed genius.

I agree with the two guys who said Ed Norton, otherwise Liev Schreiber or even John Cusack to play Fischer. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Botnivick, John Torturro as Petrosian, Mads Mickelson as Larsen and maybe Pierce Brosnan to play Spassky (good looking charming and a better actor than he is somtimes given credit for)

That's really interesting news about a movie version of _Bobby Fischer Goes to War_ -- I'll be in line to watch that. I hope the director does better with these true events than he did with _Last King of Scotland_ which, despite liking all the actors, was a disappointment.

I don't buy that it will be shallow for money reasons-- the history of Chapa's films demonstrates otherwise. This is actually, I think, a very good topic for him and could be quite good... though it isn't meant to be a chess documentary as much as a kind of biopic, so those wanting serious chess lore and moves from games are likely to be disappointed.

Ralph Macchio could play Fischer, he play the Karate Kid in the 80's, and this is what he looks like now.

Damian Chapa doesn't look anything like Fischer.  Seriously.

Fischer was a slender, thin and cocky man with radiant and bright eyes. You'd know he was playing to win and you'd know he probably would as soon as you sat down in front of him.

Mr. Chapa, at least to me, shows no such power to inspire fear. In the picture on the official site, he looks like a friendly, weightier fischer with a suit just one size too big.I'm going to be rash and just say it is miscasting from the start.

A director that starts such a project by miscasting (himself in) the critical role of fischer.. it makes me fear the worst.

I have some hopes for it. I'm not too hung up on the appearance of the character (look at how well Langella did in Frost/Nixon and he looks nothing like Nixon, really) because that can be overcome with getting the mannerism and posture and attitude right.

And I've heard nothing but good things about Polanski Unauthorized (except for possibly being too soft on Polanski)... so we can hope!

John Torturro as Fischer, Benicio del Toro as Spassky, with Jack Black and Seth Rogen as Spassky's well-meaning but bumbling Soviet handlers for comic relief.

guaranteed it will be very chess-shallow as theyre trying to make money and will cater to the majority of the population (chess illiterate) . that being said i do hope they go deep into some games and other players. either way i will watch.

They should try an talented unknown actor to play Fischer, one of those guys who only need a chance to become famous at once. A superstar cannot fit here, it must be someone special and of course Fischer-looking-like.

I'm waiting for another Fischer movie, "Bobby Fischer Goes to War", made after the book with the same name published in 2004 and written by David Edmonds and John Eidinow. The book is good and hopefully so will be the movie, expected to be launched in 2010. So far I only know the director, Kevin Macdonald, known for "The Last King of Scotland".

As about this Chapa guy, come on this is pathetic, they are offending Bobby's legend and memory because many young people not aware about chess will actually imagine him like that after seeing the film. Terrible!

Edward Norton. No contest. Right looks, right off-the-wall attitude. What do you think?
