i think  money is not only the motivation but the recognition and personal satisfaction. however i believe cash prizes will increase as interest in sitdown tournaments increases

Internet chess is destroying the USCF.  The USCF 20 years ago was doing well.  Today its days are numbered.  And chess books and magazines use to be the only way to study.  Today they are obsolete when compared to the online databases.

$2000 is a lousy prize for a major tournament.  There just isn't much interest anymore in sitdown tournament chess.  People want to stay home and play for free.  I believe internet chess is actually killing sitdown tournament chess.  Growing up in PA, I remember there use to be tournaments to go to all the time.  Now there's hardly any.  There must be a dozen or more internet chess sites.

That is true with most tournaments as this with 5 gms the prize fund would be normally more.
