Happy Birthday Vishy Anand!

Submitted by SonofPearl on Thu, 12/11/2008 at 10:25am.

World Chess Champion, Vishy Anand is 39 years old today.  Happy birthday Vishy!

He won the title of International Master at 15, was World Junior Champion at 17 and became a Grandmaster in 1988 at the age of 18.

After losing a World Championship match against Garry Kasparov in 1995, Vishy became a FIDE World Champion in 2000.

In 2007, he became World Champion by winning a World Championship tournament, and any doubt as to the legitimacy of his crown was removed when he beat Vladimir Kramnik in a match this year.

Here is a game from his 1995 world championship match with Garry Kasparov featuring a nice exchange sacrifice.

To SonofPearl

You're damn right you're jealous. Wink  I was there for this game, the 10th game with John Nunn included in his book about the 100 most important games ever played, the 11th game which was Kasparov's first use of the Dragon Sicilian against GM opposition, and game 12 which was one hell of a draw.  I'll give you another little scene from this game.

When Anand played Rd5, everybody started to analyse Nd5, followed by cd5, not ed5.  I was sitting next to an expert and we both started yelling above the commentary, "What if he doesn't take the Exchange?  There's no reason to take it."  I think it was GMs John Fedorowitz and Yasser Seirwan who were the commentators at that time, and just as they were beginning to explore the line, Garry took the Rook, and the game concluded soon after.  When Anand addressed the crowd after the game, he said that Nd5 was Black's last mistake.  It was right after that comment that I met Najdorf.

Hope you've enjoyed the color commentary.  BTW, Game 12 was the last time I was in the Twin Towers.

I don't know where you got the date for this game from, but you are way off.  I was at this game and still have the ticket stub from it.  Since I don't have access to my materials at this moment, the best I can estimate for the date of this game is  Monday, September 25, 1995.  By the way, after Black's 19....axb5, Kasparov left the room, all heads turned to the demonstration board, and I continued to watch Anand, to see how he would react.  A broad smile spread across his face, and he used both hands to cover his mouth to prevent Kasparov seeing him from smiling.  No one else noticed this because they were all watching GM Danny King and IM (at that time) Maurice Ashley analyzing the game, and the only reason I noticed it because this was my first World Championship game and I was curious about the physical reactions of the players.  It took Anand about 5 minutes to compose himself enough to lower his hands.  I'm sure that if you asked him privately, that he considered his position after ab5 as superior, if not winning.  And lastly, after this game, as I was taking the elevator down, GM Miguel Najdorf walked on, taking a place next to me.  When he said, "I will have to tell Garry that he must take better care of my variation," I almost said to him who do you think you are to say that the Najdorf Variation is named after you--but, then I realized who he was.  When I told him, "You really gave 'em hell at Zurich," he replied, "Not enough hell."  I was there for the next three games--the first three wins of the match.
