The 18 year-old David Howell (pictured) won the 2009 British Championships in Torquay with a score of 9/11.

It was a convincing victory in a tough competition, with the youngster finishing with seven wins and four draws.

A crucial draw with black against rival Simon Williams in round 8 and a thrilling win against 2008 champion Stuart Conquest in round 10 were highlights.

There's no time for Howell to rest on his laurels however, since he is now playing the the Staunton Memorial in London, in the UK v Netherlands match, alongside Championship absentees Nigel Short and Michael Adams.

Congratulations also to Jovanka Houska (pictured below) who successfully defended her title in the women's championship.

@ mindfist3000 - the women's championship was part of the "men's event" (the women played in the same competition and the one with the best score won the women's title).

The main advantage of this, is that the women have the opportunity to sharpen their skills with the men.  The disadvantage is that the women's contest gets a little subsumed in the men's event and perhaps even a little overlooked.

As part of my penance, I have added one of Jovanka's winning games. Smile

Did anyone notice that Conquest tried to repeat the same line from the Nakamura v. Friedel Match at the 2009 US Championship?

And so what about the women's championship? Why aren't some of those games worth showing?

Sunday is always so nice! This one was a good reminder of simple tactics that can go unnoticed.
