The visit of the FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov (pictured) to the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has caused such a storm of protest that FIDE has released a brief response to the controversy.

PRESS RELEASE

I was asked to visit Libya this past weekend, and I am very satisfied that I saw that chess could play such a critical role in promoting peace at this time of crisis.

I had very serious meetings regarding the objectives I had set, and I am proud that FIDE could contribute to the peace process in the region and the world.

It is therefore unfortunate that some people are trying to use this trip to wrongfully politicize the situation in FIDE and I am asking everybody to show complete solidarity for the peace efforts in Libya.

GENS UNA SUMUS - WE ARE ONE FAMILY

For reality sake, let us begin to realize that most of the people in this world are brain washed...without the proper education towards truthful information...most have been on the brink of insane reasoning...and shall never recover in this life time to realize it...in other words...most shall be ignorant until death...when shall humans realize that we share one common goal...that is all humans really want peace in their life.

Yes, Gaddafi really should be FIDe president.  Forget about Karpov.  Gaddafi is by far the best choice and here are the top ten reasons, anyone have more?

    1.  He thinks 1 e3 is the best first move, and is a really normal guy.

    2. 'Gaddafi' is easier to spell than 'Ilyumzhinov.'

    3. 40 years of leadership experience.

    4. Libya hosted the World Championship!

    5. Has his own mercenary army to enforce the rules of chess.

    6. Will impose a 'Line of Death' around tournaments to keep players from being distracted.

    7. Very solid financial resources in numerous Swiss bank accounts.

    8. Good buddies with the current president!

    9. Looks great in dark glasses and has a cool moustache like Alekhine.

    10. Will be looking for a new job real soon!!

Ah FIDE is secretly a world-peace organisation. With its very own superhero. Captain Kirsan.  I just knew it!

"When he's not abducted by aliens"

    "When a war is raging"

    "When all other diplomats fail"

Captain Kirsan uses his great chessplaying-powers to bring instant peace.

I'm glad that he fullfilled his "objectives" we should have peace within 48 hrs now.

(*) Buy the captain Kirsan action-figure. Now with automatic "b-shitter-speech" and alien controlled mind.

"Gaddafi is a killer. Is a terrorist. And Ilyumzhinov saw him for peace? Ha ha ha. He killed innocents. He abused lots of women. And what? He played chess with him.It is a disaster. A meeting is needed for the FIDE to FIRE him."

    I couldn’t possibly agree more.

tommietmiller: yes, we should now ask what were those objectives! Now Fide is even more ridiculous! Also, if you enter a zone to promote peace, you don’t affiliate with the side that is clearly criminal. Kirsan’s act is one of spitting the dissidents in their face.

I'd prefer Gaddafi over Obama or Bush any day. Heavy investment in infrastructure, free healthcare, free education and low-cost living can't be beaten anywhere in Africa. Americans watch far too much CNN Cartoon Newswork and Faux News. Libya will never be as free and wealthy once it becomes a state of the US and UK. Syria and Iran are next. They have their fair share of informants, third column, psyops, traitors, agent provocateurs, CIA operatives, economic hitmen, Western educated ex-patriots, false lesbian bloggers, etc

He also said the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was "a normal person, a politician who cheered for his republic and wanted to do good things for people"

I am sorry to tell you that you are wrong on most of what you said about Gaddafi.

I know very well what's life like in Libya. Gaddafi is the worst leader in the world. The educational system and health care in Libya are very bad, human righs and freedom of speech are much like those in North Korea. He has ruled Libya since 1969. He murdered all those who opposed him, and once orderd the massacre of 1000 dissedidents only because they complained about the ill-treatment they receive in the prison. He and his family are much like a real mafia. He described the demonstraors as 'rats'.

I can't wait to see him hanged at the hands of the Libyan people.

He says he was asked to visit, and makes the claim that he wishes to make peace. I think Gaddafi should resign to the UN, perhaps the political chess match could be employed more often in future.

I don't agree with his visit, but he's not the first to visit and help so called enemies. I don't want to make this too political, but there's been lots of fratinising with supposed enemies in the past. Things change quickly when money and oil become involved. Why are we involved in Lybia and not Syria, Egypt, Bahrain, Tunisia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, etc. where thousands have been killed and more will die.

    No oil perhaps??!!

i hate that i have to talk about politics on a chess site, but i have an unmaintainable urge as to all the comments posted picturing Gaddafi as no.1 terrorist and pure evil...U dont have a clue about Gaddafi except for what media tells you, esspecially  brainwashed americans ,majority of who dont know where the Lybia is even... Yes he is a dictator, Yes he has probably murdered, but rapist and abuser of his own people??? COME ON... Then tell my one thing... Why arent people joining the rebbels and instead making human shields in all airports and important locations? ... I will tell you why... Because they SUPPORT GADDAFI!!!! So, or all the people of lybia are frakking demented and support SATAN himself, or the picture of him is put out of proportion so they could justify their invasion... U dont have to be a scientist to know that almost all wars were over resources esspecially OIL(desert storm, even one of Hitlers primary offensives was middle east, and now Lybia)...  the population of libya is around 6 million people and have huge amounts of oil... because of that oil the libyans(not rebels who are group of arabian immigrants) are all rich and happy and they love Gaddafi and support him even in the times of war... so question must be asked how come there is a war? And now the real terrorists and murderers and rapists and abusers of all mankind come in place and their name is AMERICA and EU!!!!!!!!! in the east of libya there is a town called Bengazi and its populated by unsatisfied arabian immigrants who dont have the same priviliges and same way of life as Libyans because they are not libyans... hmm...following the principle of "divide and conquer" America and EU gave the rebels weapons and initialized first incident which then led to chain reaction and to "civic" war... it is not civic because it is fought between libyans and unhappy arabian immigrants living in libya... so why is America doing this? because when they replace Gaddafi they will forcely put their man in charge who will allow them to build their own infrastructure and oil rafineries which will grant them free oil... so the reason why are they attacking and picturing Gaddafi as the biggest terrorist is because HE WONT LET THEM... i know all this because i am from Serbia a country which went through catastrophic civic war(1990-1995) initiated again by America and EU this time for strategic-geographic reasons... they wanted to build huge army base an the balcans as they progress toward east and serbian president Slobodan Milosevic didnt allow it... year later we are at war...and then we were the terrorists, and murderers and so on, saddest thing is that half of the world think that we are to this day... so WAKE UP!!!! and know your enemy...

Mark Crowther commented on this at TWIC, and it sums up how I feel as well:

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has replied to the criticism of his visit to Libya saying "I am very satisfied that I saw that chess could play such a critical role in promoting peace at this time of crisis." and that "some people are trying to use this trip to wrongfully politicize the situation".

However the situation is inherently political and Ilyumzhinov has pretty much been expressing support for Gadaffi's rule, a very political act. Injecting himself into a current news story is an Ilyumzhinov speciality except he can't claim to be anything other than FIDE President now and thus it directly reflects on the game and the organisation.

    tipsybadger

If he was asked by world leaders to interface with this dictator he should come out and say so.  I think most chess players don't want politics to be in any way a part of the chess world, but we would understand that.

As it stands now, it appears he just thought on his own that meeting with Gaddafi would somehow be a good idea to promote chess.  If true, I certainly question his ability to lead FIDE and the chess world.  What does he think the people of Libya feel about this little meeting?  This evil pile of dung named Gadaffi is a murder and rapist of his own people and a terrorist to the world.  He may smile and play nice for a while, but his actions in life speak for themselves and are not disputed by any sane person
