Inactive Players? - Please Help!

Submitted by Graybeard on Wed, 09/16/2009 at 10:14pm.

Hello all GrayMatter Ladder Chess players!  We need your help....

There have been a number of inactive players on the ladders recently and this has created some prolems and confusion.  Please read the following... it will be a help to everyone!
There may be many reasons why someone is not able (or willing) to play and does not respond to a challenge, but such inactivity effectively 'blocks' the ladder for those below him/her and that can be quite frustrating for others.  Some of the rules that govern GrayMatter Ladder Chess (you have read them, right?!) are designed to minimize this problem...

In the 'Spirit of GrayMatter Chess' please note and abide by the following:

1.  If your are no longer interested or able to play on the ladder, please let me know and I can remove you from the ladder.

2.  Remember that you must accept a valid challenge from someone who is the appropriate number of rungs below you (currently 4 for the 5-day ladder and 3 for the 2-day ladder).  It is your responsibility to be open for any valid challenge.  If you are not (e.g. you have not logged in for a long time or you have your chess.com account set with various restrictions that make a challenge impossible to others players) 'challengeable' and this results in a valid challenge being rejected you are liable to be penalized with a forfeit.

3.  Whenever you issue a challenge to another player please report that in the forum a.s.a.p.  This makes it easier for me to determine if and when a possible forfeit may need to be assigned.

4.  If you make a challenge that is not accepted within the appropriate number of days for play on the ladder (i.e. 2 or 5 days) then please report that also in the forum and so I can handle things according to the rules.

5.  If you make a challenge that is not accepted by the system (e.g. you get an error message) when you issue it please report that right away also.
Note: Please do not seek to 'be nice' (I can't believe Graybeard Innocent is saying that!!) by just moving on to challenge someone else instead.  While that may be well intentioned on your part, it doesn't really help the rest of the folks on the ladder because the inactive player has effectively blocked things for others below him.  If such a the challenge is rejected and you have reported it in the forum, then you are always free to send a message to the person you challenged and let them know that they are at risk of having a forfeit penalty assigned to them by me because of inactivity.  They can then have the option of changing their settings if they want to and thus avoiding a penalty.

I look forward to the day when chess.com may be in a position to implement programming that would eliminate such complications and faciliate ladder chess.  But until then we simply have to live with rules and procedures like all of this...

Thanks to each one of you for playing GrayMatter Ladder Chess and contributing to a fun, positive and friendly environment here!

Graybeard Innocent
