Kaidanov-Polgar: Dark Crisis

Submitted by MikeRoesell on Wed, 02/24/2010 at 6:34pm.

Round three of this Sicilian themed chess match and the score is White 3, Black 0.  Will we see a break for the second player in tomorrows fourth and final game? Only the chess gods can tell.

Today's game found GM Judit Polgar with black pieces in the Najdorf variation and GM Gregory Kaidanov playing 6.Bg5. While she seemed to have equalized Polgar let the game slip away with a few inaccuracies. Kaidanov played well and managed, with a little help from Polgar's final mistake, to herd Black into mating pattern.  Polgar quickly resigned with mate in three.

Kaidanov now leads the match 2-1 with one game to play.  Is Polgar hungry enough to break down Kaidanov's Scheveningen tomorrow and force a blitz playoff? Only time, tactics and position will tell. You can follow the final game live here.

Polgar has just won the 4th game. The match is now even at 2-2.

Nicely done, Mike. But in your notes you mentioned black's mate attempt on a3 (should have said a2).

Lot's of people underestimated Kaidanov before the match took place, I'm happy to see great games coming out of this theme match. Although scheveningen is not my favourite, I expect great game today.

looking at this game and the one in the last article, Kaidanov is a pretty vicious attacker with white. exciting games!

Black could have won by sacrificing rook on move 32 instead of Qc7.

Nice game by Kaidanov since Judit Polgar is rank 46th world ELO rating.
