Karjakin Wins ACP World Rapid Cup

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sat, 05/29/2010 at 9:47am.

It took an Armageddon decider to separate Sergey Karjakin (pictured) from Dmitry Jakovenko in an all Russian final of the 4th ACP World Rapid Cup (previous report here).

After the four rapid games and two blitz tiebreak games ended in a draw, Karjakin managed to win the Armageddon game thanks to an endgame blunder by his opponent.

Jakovenko had ended the winning run from veteran Mikhail Gurevich in the semi-final, while Karjakin had recovered from a first game loss to beat Alexander Grischuk.

Some games from the final and semi-finals are below.  All games from the tournament are available at the official site.

The last move of the first game listed is incredible. Who would imagine that winning or drawing would be decided by whether a pawn is moved two or three spaces?! It comes down to a win by 62 ... b6 or a draw by 62 ... b5. Great move by Karjakin.

WARNING

http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/twic.html is a way to get the games. The problem I have with the official site is that is is blocked by my anti-virus (Kaspersky) with the words "Access Denied." The explanation is "HEUR: Trojan.Script.Generic." My previous anti-virus program was not as effective.

Congratulations to Sergey Karjakin! He played exceptionally well. I especially liked the last game listed. The 63rd move 63.Rxe5+! was brilliant. Well played Karjakin.
