Karpov To Run For FIDE President

Multi-millionaire Kirsan Ilyumzhinov from Kalmykia has been president of FIDE since 1995, and although he has ploughed a lot of his own money into the game, commercial sponsors are few and far between.

Rightly or wrongly, FIDE has a reputation for ineptitude and corruption.  While this image remains it is hard to see a prosperous commercial future for the game as it competes with the likes of Poker for attention from sponsors.

The last attempt to unseat Ilyumzhinov was in 2006 when Dutch businessman Bessel Kok failed in his election bid.  At the time Anatoly Karpov's blunt opinion was that "even a dickhead would do a better job than Ilyumzhinov".

Fast forward 4 years and Karpov (pictured above) has announced that he is standing against Ilyumzhinov for the FIDE presidency!  There's an obvious joke there, which I will resist making out of great respect for the former world champion. Sealed

The election will take place during the 39th Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk this September.  The French chess magazine and website Europe-Echecs has an interview with Karpov about his decision, which you can see here.

I once heard Kasparov is into real politics and want to run for Russian presidency. He might not care about this petty FIDE which has ousted him lot of times. And just the same he would recommend Karpov if given a chance because that will be in best interest of chess players in general

How long will it be before Kasparov challenges Karpov for the presidency of FIDE?

Well, I'll make the joke - Karpov is kind of a dickhead - but perhaps thats what FIDE needs, somebody that will stand up for the only real commodity that FIDE has - the players.  We've had enough of the petty beaurocrats that only want to promote their own interests (enough of the damn Olympics already!), does anybody REALLY want to make Chucky pee in a cup or make players that are 1 minute late forfit?  Absurd, time and time again Ilyumzhinov spit in the face of the people he was supposed to be representing.

Its time for somebody that will get out there and drum up sponsers, put on great tournaments, fix the broken world championship, and rebuild the foundation of the game.  Karpov may not be the right guy, but I'm pretty sure who the wrong guy is.

not bad at all, because he has the experience to manage those tourneys but the sad part of it is.... is he retiring from the game of chess? 'coz you can only serve one master at a time?....

but nevertheless, if karpov is elected FIDE pres. i will look forward on it....

Karpov is perfectly for the position as FIDE President. He knows exactly the needs of the chess world, the plans in the future, the heart of the chessplayer, and of course the vital role of what chess help in molding personality and a nation-building. Go, Anatoly, i'll support you 100%.

When someone is running for an office, voters should always ask the candidate what they propose to do, and why they are different from the people currently running things.

FIDA needs a president who is dedicated in bringing chess to the public awareness - especially through school systems such as the Russians have so successfully done. I don't know whether Karpov is the person for this, but so far nobody has been.

If Kasparov supports Karpov's candidacy, that would be amazing!

Karpov's success in the Soviet era verifies that he is no stranger to corruption. Even so, I suspect he can command respect not possible for a two-bit dictator. I hope his campaign triumphs.

I think Karpov should take the spot. he has shown great passion for the game, and has remained involved for a long time. He also knows the game from a very unique perspective.

The World is interested in Chess but there are people who are also interested in having the reins of FIDE in their hands. Whoever wins, Chess should not suffer at any cost otherwise, it would be a biggest sin on earth.Yell

In the interests of balance, I should add that Karpov is also a multi-millionaire! (billionaire, if you're counting in roubles) Wink
