Karpov v Kasparov update

Submitted by SonofPearl on Mon, 09/21/2009 at 1:15pm.

You may have heard that former World Chess Champions, and living legends, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov are playing a rapid/blitz match for charity in Valencia, Spain.

Several anxious members (well, two anyway!) have asked when today's game is due to start.  Fear not, you haven't missed anything yet, because there isn't a game today (Monday 21 Sept).  Instead, the two K's are limbering up with separate simultaneous exhibitions.

The match will take place on the 22/23/24 Sept, with games starting at 7pm local time, which translates to 1pm in New York (you can work out the time in you area from the World Clock).

There will be two rapid games played on the 22nd, and another two on the 23rd (time control 25 mins plus 5 second increment).  On the 24th Sept they will play eight blitz games (5 mins plus 2 second increment).

The official site seems to promise live coverage, but we will have to see how the site copes with the huge amount of internet traffic about to come it way!

Game 1:  Karpov gets into time trouble and loses suddenly after 24 moves.

Game 2: Another win for Kasparov with 22.Nf6 being a crucial move!

come on people you really think these guys cared!! THEY GOT  A PAYCHECK,i am not a hater...but  really,i doubt very much if karpov really got ready for the match in preparation, except maybe by the looks of him packing an extra lunch.and that is his right you get  to be an ex-champ and you get to make the easy money.bless them both.....

when fischer played against spassky in 1992, for past 20 years fischer had his 2785 Elo rating. After the 1992 match, his real strength was revealed, that he no longer had that 2785 caliber. Spassky was a consistent player, his age gap with fischer not that far. Kasparov and Karpov played according to what the Elo rating system predicted, and with that I may say, that Kasparov still has some fire to breath. If he will exert his full energy refining and updating his repertoire, a possible Kasparov vs Carlsen/Topalov/Anand for the championship match may take place in a very near future. But of course, Gary had already set his attention to what he believe are higher causes.

Karpov is 57 year old and is still rated over 2600.  I think he is playing as well as can be expected.

Karpov is calculating too much instead of trusting himself.

They're playing the exact same lines as the first game yesterday but I think Karpov found an improvement with 11. a4

I think Karpov was far too defensive and lacked in confidence.

kasparov's last professional rating was 2812, while karpov's continued inclusion in the cycle with a rating of 2619.  after garry's 2 wins yesterday, his supposed new rating is now 2824 Elo.  Remember bobby fischer who played spassky after 20 years of absence in the chess stage, had a hard time maintaining that 2785 Elo. (spassky remained in the cycle during those years).  Kasparov's absence from competitive play is approximately 4 years since Linares 2005.

How do we know Kasparov's rating is still 2812? He's been retired from competitive play for several years. Or is that the last rating he had when he retired?

Anyone have an opinion on why Karpov's play has deteriorated so much compared to Kasparov's? Karpov has even still been playing competitive chess during Kasparov's retirement.

My prediction is that Karpov will win only 2 games out of all the games with Kasparov.

@ DEEPERGRAY - no, their ratings are unaffected because these are only rapid/blitz games and so don't count.  Kasparov has retired in any case, so he doesn't appear on the rating list.
