Leko defeats Gustafsson to take sole lead

The lead changed hands yet again today in Dortmund as a novelty by Gustafsson, 16.Qb3, in the Queen's Indian did not prove a worthwhile move.  Leko (pictured) took advantage of the resulting doubled b-pawns to eventually win the game.

At the bottom of the standings, poor Loek Van Wely lost again in ugly fashion, this time to Arkadij Naiditsch.  He managed to last a few more moves than yesterday's quick loss, but somehow contrived to have tripled f-pawns at one point.  Oh dear.

Will Leko hang on to win in Dortmund?  The last round is tomorrow.

The results in round 6:

Gustafsson, Jan - Leko, Peter 0-1 45 E15 Queens Indian
Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar - Ivanchuk, Vassily ½-½ 29 E25 Nimzo Indian Saemisch
Kramnik, Vladimir - Nepomniachtchi, Ian ½-½ 39 D11 Slav Defence
Naiditsch, Arkadij - Van Wely, Loek 1-0 26 B90 Sicilian Najdorf Variation

Phooey! I was hoping Gusti would win, but now it will be very difficult 4 him 2 win the trnt. because he is 1/2 a pt. behind Leko w/ only 1 rd. left. I was hoping Leko would "peter" out :D @ the end of the trnt., but it didn't happen. I like to pull 4 the underdog. Regardless of what happens Gusti has played one heck of a trnt.. He is the lowest rated player of the eight participants, & he was in the lead. & yeah, 16.Qb3 wasn't a good move. In fact, it seems that the majority of the time when Qb3 (or Qb6 4 black) is played in the opening it doesn't do a whole lot, & sometimes it even loses the game 4 the player who plays it. One good thing about this scenario is that u know that Gusti & Nepo won't agree 2 a quick draw because they both know that the only chance each of them has to win the trnt. is 2 win in the final rd. & hope that Leko doesn't win his game against Naiditsch. In Gusti's case he will have 2 hope that Leko loses. That was a great pick tas58 because Leko has a losing record against Kramnik & Chucky. I didn't expect him 2 have 2 much of a chance 2 win it.

Leko wins tomorrow and he captures Dortmund for this year. Somebody (very wise) picked him to win the tourney in an earlier article.Wink
