Maxime Triumphs at Biel

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (pictured) won the Biel GM Tournament with a score of 6/10, half a point ahead of Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Morozevich.

Maxime drew his last 2 games, but it proved enough to win since Chucky lost to Moro in the penultimate round after a rook sacrifice proved a little too ambitious.

Congratulations to Maxime on winning a major event at just 18 years of age, and without losing a single game!

The final standings were:

Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime    FRA   2703 *   *   ½   1 ½   ½   ½   ½   ½   ½   ½   1 6
Morozevich, Alexander   RUS  2751 ½  0 *  *  ½  1 1 0 1 1 0 ½
Ivanchuk, Vassily   UKR  2703 ½  ½  ½  0 *  *  ½  ½  ½  ½  1 1
Alekseev, Evgeny   RUS  2714 ½  ½  0 1 ½  ½  *  *  ½  ½  ½  ½  5
Gelfand, Boris   ISR  2755 ½  ½  0 0 ½  ½  ½  ½  *  *  ½  ½  4
Caruana, Fabiano   ITA  2670 ½  0 1 ½  0 0 ½  ½  ½  ½  *  *  4

Special mention must go to Morozevich who played lots of creative, entertaining and exciting chess and featured in 7 of the 10 decisive games in the tournament!  He ended with 4 wins, 3 losses and only 3 draws.

Due to technical problems, I am unable to post any games, but they are available at the official site.

why not 3 for a win , 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss, like football? Than Morozevich Alexander should be the winner with 15points!

""that is true..i think that the 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for loss is a much better way of things- it will stop players playing for the draw by encouraging them to play for a win- and will stop players "winning" tournaments when they havent won any games in the first place."

    That's the exact same thing as 1-win, .5-draw, 0-loss..."

except that everything would be multiplied by 2 :p.

hahaha,, it is quite unfair 'coz he almost played all of his game in draw (just 2 wins) yet he is the crowned winner, yes he didn't lost a game and he had 6 points but hey!!!, are we just playing for DRAW?

Congratulations to Maxime Vachier - Lagreve!

He deserved the victory as the only undefeated player. On the other hand, he was a bit lucky because Moro had a great position against him but somehow lost the game anyway. It would be very nice if someone could analyse this game, beause for me as a hobby chess player it's been incomprehensible why Moro did not take Vachier - Lagreve's rook which was hanging for about 10 moves? Well, Moro is a super GM - he should have a reason for this.

Anyway, it is in my opinion not fair to accuse Moro of a lack of fighting spirit. He had to draw his game against Caruana in the 10th round as Caruana had a strong attack and Moro had to escape into a repitition of moves to save a half point. Maybe Caruana could have fought on, but he was evidently satisfied with the draw after 9 games in less than two weeks against super GMs. I agree with the author of the article above that Moro deserves an extra thanks, because he always tried to go for the whole point, even if this meant loosing the game when he could have easily achieved a draw (against Caruana, maybe also against Vachier - Lagreve).

Draw in the last round turnament chess in a matter of common, usually because the players did not want to take risks. Congratulation Maxime...

What is up with all the quick draws in the last round,if I was Moro I would have  bleed to death b4giving a draw to Cuarano, seems like the last round is prearranged b4 the tournament  after seeing  so many "fixed" last rounds???? Alekseev should have been playing for a win with white as well, very very fishy...no wonder chess has little sponsorship,I would not spend a dollar for these cheaters.

Finally he wins one! I'm hoping he one day becomes WCC simply because his name, in French, is basically equivalent to "Maxime fuckyou-whiny" which would make for a hilarious world champion. :D
