Mentors

Folks,

Okay, who wants to be a mentor?  That seemed to be one of the big draws for this group.  We'll run the list of potential mentors as a new article.  If you want to offer your services, just send chessdad, ilovegambits or I a note with your screen name, rating, what you focus on and whether you are taking folks on.

I'll even go first...sign up and help someone out.  You might just find out you learn more than they do.

Those seeking mentors, just drop the one that sounds interesting a note...

My best advice:  If losing bothers you in a negative way, stop playing for awhile.

Emiab,

Two different concepts.  Middle game is the point in the game after the initial opening moves but before you enter the end game where most pieces are removed.

My guess is middle game begins when most of your bishops and knights have moved and the end game begins when queens are off the board or you are down to just two or three "pieces."  A piece being bishop, knight, rook or queen.

Open refers to games where there is a lot of maneuvering space on the board.  Bishops and rooks tend to be very powerful in these games.

Closed games are when the board is very cluttered and positional in nature.  Rooks and bishops cannot move freely.  Knights tend to be powerful in these games.

Hope that helps explain it a little bit.
