While the traditional Dortmund tournament in Germany has been intermittently entertaining us, the newly minted Donostia/San Sebastian chess festival in Spain has been trying it's best to compete.

The showpiece event is a 10-player round-robin with an eclectic mix of talents from around the world.

    Karpov, a billionaire?

    What Money Can't Buy

By BORIS GULKO and GABRIEL SCHOENFELD
    July 27, 2007

The Dutch magazine, New In Chess, recently reported that Petromir, a Russian energy company, owns a tract of Siberia with 43 trillion cubic meters of natural gas underneath it. What does that fact have to with chess?

The answer is that Petromir is solely owned by one Anatoly Karpov, former chess champion of the world. Karpov is now a wealthy man, worth approximately $2 billion......

Please see this for the complete article..

demetrios18, Kasparov did not retire because he lost one game to Topalov. He lost one game, his last, at Linares because he was retiring immediately after the game. He should have drawn that game and taken clear first. Instead, he made a losing move in the ending and tied for first. He left at the top, not as champion, but as the best player. I believe he realized that he was reaching the age at which Karpov declined and had other interests.

As for Karpov, I'm always glad to see the past champions compete.  As Tennyson wrote:

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days

Karpov has been inactive for years and now he enters a tournament full of super GM's.  His rating has taken a slide and that is without even playing much.  we can't blame age just look at Victor.

The problem is Karpov does not take the time to work on his game anymore.  When was the last time he even played in a standard time limit tournament?

He has been inactive for years.

This tournaments is mainly super GM's who will take the full point if your not up to the highest standard.

Karpov's results don't matter. He is still the best and the richest. Karpov is the only billionnaire chess player! He is the real number 1.

Nobody yet can accomplish what he has accomplished. Nakamura, Kasparov, Anand and Topalov still have to surpass him in their lifetime, maybe two or more lifetimes.

Karpov shouldn't participate in such tournaments any more....he is by far the best but he is too old to handle such situations....

2 bad,...somebody had to advice him not to play...

    This is not Karpov.

Well done to Nakamura,he is very offensive and a brilliant player.

I think in the next years he will become world's number one chess player...Remember he is only 22...!

For those arguing about the identity of the Anatoly Karpov playing in this event, here is a link that shows who Nakamura thought he was playing.

FIRST! Oh, this is not the puzzle, but it is the first CHESS comment.

In Nakamura-Vallejo: Why not 33.Bb5? The reason is 33...Bxc3+.

    In Movsesian-Ponomariov: Why not 32...Qxh2? The reason is 33.exf7+ Kf8 or Kh8 or Kh7 34.Qxg7+ Kxg7 35.fxe8=Q+ Kf6 36.Rf7+ Kg5 37.Qd8+Kf4 38.Qc7+ and 39.Qxh2.
