New group

Submitted by Raymond on Sun, 08/09/2009 at 8:41am.

All,

I have created a new group call "Carver Center Chess" to publicize the chess activities at the Carver Center. After the recent "split" of the Leesburg club, I do feel the need to affirm the independence of the Carver Center. (I hate to see friends fight and I am not going to rehash the events - I let my views known to all the principals in private e-mail exchanges-)

Carver Center Chess is definitely not a club, it depends on the good will of our County and its first purpose is educational. (Chess mainly but we will also emphasize the fairness and sportmanship aspect of the game as well as the importance of organized thought process in all aspects of life.)

We also want to serve as a center of chess activities and exchange in the area (from Manassas to Frederic, from Reston to Winchester) but I propose the use of the "Loudoun" chess.com group for that side of our activities.

Do not try to "join" the "Carver Center Chess" group but feel free to use the forum to exchange ideas.

More later, I have a busy week-end.

Raymond

Jay,

you say:

"People working out differences is just a normal part of everyday life, being it be in the home, work place, community and even in our friendships and personal relationships. I highly doubt new chess groups, or where chess groups may hold their events, has any coorelation to the prior issue that was addressed.  The issue was "should one person or entity be able to manifest personal gain off what can perceive as a "nonprofit" group without the prior courtesy of asking the head or heads of a group".  One can cal this the law of "common sense"  in which principle of ettiquette is used to ask permission of the head or heads of a group, in such situations. "

In some way, this is not a new group, certainly not a new club. The Carver Center activities have always been independent of the Leesburg Club. I just wanted a more independent forum to publicize our activities, now that Loudoun County has several "clubs" that both contribute members to our Thursday sessions. As far as THE principle of "etiquette" you do talk about when you describe the "prior issue", it can not be looked at in isolation: MANY principles of etiquette were violated during that confrontation. I wish all parties involved would have a look back and make a list of etiquette principles that were violated by their own camp; that exercice may be profitable for the future of their respective club.

Raymond,  Carver was there by itself before any affiliation and it will still be there long after any affiliation is gone.  Its purpose and mission is admirably different and thanks to you and others, it has and will continue to prosper and serve a diverse group.  For a different reason as well was Loudoun Chess formed and hopefully continue to serve.  I am just glad to be working with you or anyone in the county to further joint interests and bring benefits to the community as a whole.

From my opinion on my site at http://loudounchess.org/node/52 I will say that things have not been pleasant and I am sure we all wished that they did not happen in the first place.  I chose not to publicly dissect the details of the situation.  The fallout I believe, is partly a result of not understanding what some identify as the characteristics and norms of social networks and the effect of reputations or respect within a community.  Sorry if I sound too academic.

Further public discourse from a finger pointing perspective is probably not terribly constructive.  What probably matters more is where we go from here and what we do as a whole.  There are lots of chess players in the area that don't like each other, tournament directors that avoid each other or other similar behavior.  We don't need to add to that.  If anything, we have to keep in mind how to avoid similar future mistakes.

People working out differences is just a normal part of everyday life, being it be in the home, work place, community and even in our friendships and personal relationships. One can try to point to the fact that no concrete rules existed at the time of the addressed occurence, along with no bylaws that governed such a group, but as stated above "common sense law" covers many aspects of life.  The Leesburg Chess Club to my knoweldge, was scraping dollars together and at times taking a loss, just to make ends meet, and to make the club survive as a whole.  Therefore, the act at hand that occured was a form of known malicious extortion against the Leesburg Chess Club and has no relationship to the entities or Chess Clubs around different counties and areas.  I live right out of Winchester, Virginia and both clubs are relatively the same distance to me which makes me a mutual party to both said clubs.  I would love a chess club in Winchester, or other areas.  It makes me so happy that more chess clubs are sprouting up across the country, due to the unlimited range of connectivity and communication, along with organization by means of the internet and computers.  Now with all that said, let us remember we all love chess, and we are all adults, and we definitely are not unintelligent, so let's stop making all the excuses, "like we didn't know what we did," because these excuses are childish.  If you need to reach me, you are welcome to call or email me at: 540-327-9845 or jay@ghostlyencountersva.com.  See you all at chess I enjoy playing every one of you!!!

Raymond,

Thanks for creating the group, Carver Center Chess, which will bring further awareness to local chess players about chess activities at the Carver Center in Purcellville, Virginia, while promoting the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship, not only in chess, but also in all aspects of life.

Best regards,

Charles Frey
