Wolfgang Uhlmann cropped by Anežka Kružíková.jpgThe 'Old Hands" made a dramatic comeback to defeat the Snowdrops in the 2012 edition of this challenge in the Czech Republic.

The team of 4 young women players, the "Snowdrops", had enjoyed a significant 10-6 lead at the halfway stage of this double Scheveningen competition (each team member plays each player on the other team twice).

However the veteran male players, the "Old Hands", staged a convincing comeback to turn the tables on their opponents to win 17-15.

The Old Hands team were GM Vlastimil Hort, GM Wolfgang Uhlmann (pictured), GM Fridrik Olafsson and GM Oleg Romanishin.  The Snowdrops team were IM Valentina Gunina, IM Tania Sachdev, WGM Alina Kaslinskaya and WIM Kristýna Havlíková.

Age and experience likely wins the most.

Very suspicious, the old coots making a comeback in the second half of the tourny...... two years in a row! If anything, they should be running out of steam in the latter stages of the event!Wink...... Just kidding! Good article and tournament. The women's performance was more than respectable, and I'd like to see more mixed-gender competitions. I believe it would raise the playing strength of female players. I still haven't heard a plausable explanation for the rather large ratings disparity between the sexes. Maybe tougher opponents would compel better performance.

I'm pretty sure this is the second year in a row the Old Hands have come back after being down at the halfway stage. You should have mentioned that. :D

    Cerebral-tactic

These games go to prove that old lions still got teeth. A aged grandmaster plays like a machine while a young master is human. Who plays better? Leave it to the peculiarities and unpredictabilities of tactical vs positional chess!
