Russia Or India For Anand v Gelfand

fide logo big.gifFIDE have confirmed that they have received 2 bids to host the 2012 World Championship Match between Vishy Anand of India and Boris Gelfand of Israel.

The Indian bid is sponsored by the Tamil Nadu government to the sum of 200 million rupees (approx 4.5 million US Dollars).

This is higher than the Russian bid, but critics have questioned whether financial guarantees are in place to confirm the money is available.

The Russian bid is more of a known quantity, but is 'only' for 2 million US Dollars (see clarification from mishanp in the comments).  The sponsor is the Russian billionaire Andrei Filatov.

Supporters of the Moscow bid will point to their experience at hosting major chess events, and the fact that Moscow would be a more neutral venue.

Neither bid is therefore from a commercial sponsor, which is something of a pipe dream.  An early bid from Universal Event Promotions (before the Candidates event) to stage the contest in London was withdrawn following disagreements with FIDE.

The official press release from FIDE:

FIDE announces that two offers were received in its office by the deadline of 31 July for the World Championship Match 2012, one from the Russian Chess Federation and one from the All India Chess Federation. Both offers are well above the minimum required prize fund of 1 million euros.

FIDE is currently in contact with the bidders, the players and the two national federations for additional clarifications. The final decision will be made by the FIDE President by 10 August.

Why not INDIA? i think it would be a great place for this special event.Russia was the hosting heavyweight in chess for many years let India be the host .It will bring a fresh revival of the game to not only the younger generation but, all who love the game.

I think it is somewhat of a joke that there is World Championship in 2012 and the place is still unknown. How long has this bidding system been in place? Plus, the place should be neutral. Topalov in Bulgaria and Anand in India? I think chess needs a Dana White (UFC President), who can hammer a strong international organization together that is self supportive, financially sound, has a strong youth development program, supports and nurtures up and coming players and does not have to go around begging for bids. UCC (Ultimate Chess Championship) or similar; with ratings class tournaments, somewhat more realistic and sustainable prize money and a strong supportive social media network, like chess.com. We could let the ring side girls slide...

...as always...it will be the money that will do the talking IMHO.

I am not convinced that FIDE is really concerned about increasing chess awareness etc...though I would imagine that everyone is fed up with Russia producing another WCC...luckily for India, her bid is in the lead...

man, u have no idea the how rich indians are now-a days.. no joke.. and 4.5 mn dollar is peanut...... but again no one will beieve it.. but u will after 5 yrs... more importantly, india is the place to be right now.. and best part is because of the chaotic situation here, the spoon-fed citizens of the west find india difficult to travel.. so the outside world has very little idea about the progress here.. and i am  happy for that!  and anand will be champion for next 5 yrs at least..

This time I pick India, not because Anand from India, but for the chess itself!.

yes, if held in India, it will inspire a lot of youth. In Russia, I do not think it will create any fresh impact...

On the other hand, a calmer and more serene atmosphere in Russia, might help to create a more conducive atmosphere - in India lot of excitement from the crowd might adversely affect the players and lower the standard of play (as happened in Sophia near the end).

Doesn't matter if they play in Moscow or in India.. Anand is going to win anyway, but I would prefer India, Russia has many players anyway,so it would be nice to have the championship in India. Maybe next time in Armenia, who knows?

The primary concern should be highest bid.

Secondary concern should be player's preferences. Anand did not object to Sophia. If Gelfand has any objection about India, then Russia should be selected. Both players must be OK with the venue.

I do not think any other factor matters much.

"China, however, has polluted air (no offense to China, just using as an example) and Canada has clean air"--

Yes, but China does have its very impressive system of black jails!
Why anybody would want to play in China is difficult to understand.

Sounds like you have serious doubts about the Indian bid.

@Lawdoginator How does the highest bidder deserve it? What if the Olympics had two bids to host, from Canada and China. Canada offered 2 million (tax-free) and China offered 4.5 million (not tax-free). China, however, has polluted air (no offense to China, just using as an example) and Canada has clean air. What would you choose? Same scenario here. Russians have more experience and will able to organize the tournament a lot better.

It should go to the highest bidder, unless there are serious doubts about the bid.
