Shanghai Masters Update

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sun, 09/05/2010 at 10:48am.

Two more rounds of the double-round robin Shanghai Masters have seen Alexei Shirov join Lev Aronian as joint leader.

Shirov and Aronian had a thrilling encounter in round two, with plenty of "Fire on Board" to entertain the crowds in a 54-move draw.  Kramnik pressed hard looking for a full point against Wang Hao, but the Chinese player held firm to score his first points.

In round three, Shirov succeeded where Kramnik had failed by defeating Wang Hao in a wild game, while Aronian managed to shut out Kramnik for a draw.

So at the halfway point the scores (using the football system) look like this:

1  Aronian, Levon ARM 2783 * * 1 . 1 . 3 . 5
2  Shirov, Alexei ESP 2749 1 . * * 1 . 3 . 5
3  Kramnik, Vladimir RUS 2780 1 . 1 . * * 1 . 3
4  Wang Hao CHN 2724 0 . 0 . 1 . * * 1

The top two finishers will go forward to join Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen in Bilbao in October for the Grand Slam Final.

What's Shanghai lumpia? Is it similar to the Spaghetti Bolognese, or the Chicken Tikka Masala in that neither of these exist in their 'native' countries?

 @StrategyKing420

if 30. Nxe6, then simply 30...Rxc3. Now if white captures the rook, black plays fxe6 and white has lost a knight. And if 31. Nxd8 then 31...Rxe3 and white will still end up losing the knight.

Its more then possible actually probable that I am missing something in my calculations. So hopefully someone can tell me what it is I am missing but to me it seems like in Kramnik,V (2780) vs. Aronian,L (2783) round 3 on move 30 Kramnik played Nb3 when to me it looks like he could have played a simple tactic Nxe6 just winning a pawn and the exchange? Maybe I am missing something more then the tactic like black gets some counter play or something down the road farther then I could calculate in any strong manner? Or I am straight up blundering lol. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Shirov's games are INTENSE! He is very sharp! His play stands out as superior in these games. If it is true that he beat Kramnik then I would love to see that game too. Shirov means business.

Kramnik must stop his fears and play risky chess !  this is the only way to get further it seems that kramnic has lost confidence on him ! I think this year he didn't show yet what he is able to do ! Kramnik must start from the beginning !  let's do it man... if you have beat kasparov then nobody can stop you !!

Kramnik to retire?!

He is 7 years younger than B. Gelfand, 6 years than V. Anand & V. Ivanchuk and younger than G. Kamsky - another candidate for the 2012 WC matches. Besides, he is one of the elite players; currently on the 5th place just 3 points behind L. Aronian (4) and 19 points ahead of P. Eljanov (6). Please do not underestimate him!!!

Do you think Kramnik will bounce back from this downward spiral, or do you think it will continue until he retires?
