So Wins 7th Blitz "Death Match"!

  • IM DanielRensch
  • on 7/30/12, 3:59 PM.

Grandmaster Wesley So jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead against Grandmaster Ray Robson in Chess.com's 7th Blitz Death Match, and he never looked back! In arguably the most lopsided Death Match yet, the Filipino #1 dominated the entire match, finishing with a plus score in all three time control "sets", ultimately winning by a final tally of 23 to 9.

Robson admitted heading into the match that he knew So would be considered the favorite by most, and Ray worried he was not heading into the Death Match in "his best form". So proved him right, continuing his current hot streak (So has won the last two international tournaments he's competed in, and nears his all time highest FIDE Rating of almost 2680) by running away with the match.

Though IM's Rensch and Pruess (who covered the match live on Chess.com/TV) agreed that the match was played at a high level by both players as far as chess moves are concerned, the obvious difference in the match was So's ability to consistently gain and maintain large time advantages. Robson could not avoid time pressure in what seemed like every game, consistently misplaying still "roughly equal positions" with much less time than his opponent.

Grandmaster Wesley So thanked his countrymen for all their support after the match

Both players were "class acts" following the final game in their respective "post match interviews", thanking Chess.com for the opportunity. Robson requested another opportunity to compete in a Death Match for a chance at redemption, while So said he is looking forward to a "winners elimination event" of some kind.

I enjoyed watching the match. Very creative and intuitive chess playing by Wesley. I agree with IM's Rensch and Pruess when they said that even the filipino fans would want Ray Robson to win the game when he is down on a 3-0 hole. I really would love Ray to put up a good fight, though Wesley is calculating very accurately and creatively seeing brilliant moves that normal chess players would not see on a blitz match. Just my humble opinion, Wesley played aggressive and very tactical chess comparable to Alekhine and Fischer on this game. Thank you Chess.com. :)

'just when I thought the games would turn out to be.  Wesley So provided a significant victory not only for the Philippines but to the whole chess community as well.  Well done!

Yes, later in the year all the winners of these matches should play an elimination tournament for the 2012 crown

Wesley So is asian blitz champion, Robson is not in his league yet. Take note he just won 2 tournaments in Canada.

Great job by Wesley! Now is the time to hire a battery of coaches for the young lad. For most of his young career, he has had to work for himself.

I enjoy the colorful commentary by IM Rensch and IM Pruess and both players were class acts.

High-level speed chess is amazing. Wesley and Ray did not disappoint and the commentary was right on top of the game situations. More Death please.
