Bulgaria to Host Anand v Topalov

Submitted by SonofPearl on Fri, 10/16/2009 at 11:54am.

Today marks the end of the (extended) deadline for bids from potential hosts for the planned Anand v Topalov match for the World Chess Championship.

Although none of the bidders could provide the bank guarantees that FIDE was looking for, the bid from Sofia was backed by a written promise from no less than the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov to honour the 3 million euro costs to cover the players' prize money, FIDE's cut, and the costs of actually staging the match.

FIDE decided to accept, probably because they had no other real choice.  Apparently bank guarantees weren't available for "technical" reasons.  I imagine these "technical" reasons might have something do with the world being in the middle of massive global recession!  FIDE's tarnished reputation doesn't help either of course.  What a huge disappointment that even the WCC title match seems unable to find a corporate sponsor.

The 12-game match is tentatively scheduled for April 2010.  Assuming it actually goes ahead roughly as planned (which is by no means certain, yet) it's a massive blow to the defending champion Anand who will have to play in his opponent's home country.  Despite Bulgaria making reassuring noises about ensuring fair treatment and neutrality, it's hard to see how this is remotely possible to achieve in practice.

Chessbase has plenty to say about the WCF.  See here and especially here.  The WCF appears not be recognized by anyone but the organisers themselves.

Yet compare this to competitor WCF

www.americanchessassociation.org which received financial guarantee for 6 million US for the WCF 2011 match between winner of upcoming challenger's series and the WCF titleholder

I'm looking forward to it too. Interesting discussion about who really is the best in the world.

Topalov will send that Indian back home with only his shorts on, Topalov will drain every drop of sweat out of Anand, and laugh in his face!

Of course it all boils down to one thing... money. And yes it is somewhat unfair for Anand, the champion to play in the challenger's turf. Add the fact that so many other super GMs are worthy (?) of this titled event.

But these two has the right decide to play ( or not) where they want to, how much price money they want, because they entitled and worked for it!

lets not comment a lot and wait for the games to begin. The Fisher stunt should not happen again, chess should have no boundary. If they are unfair to Anand, they will be judged accordingly, but give Bulgaria a chance!

anyone saying one player should "crush" or "win easily", is a fool...both of these players are at their peeks in their career...even though topa looked sluggish in China...all the same Vishy and Topa will be one of the best matches in chess...in a really long time...

I doubt that the venue will make that much of a difference to Anand.  If vishy were a headcase that allowed trivial things to get in his mind *cough-cough shirov, cough*, then it might matter.  For a solid personable player like Anand, his game would probably not be much affected even if they played on a rush hour subway game.

I do tend to agree with those that suggest that by the time this game is finally played niether of these players will really have claim to the title of best in the world.  If Carlson does at the Tal Inv. what he did in China (a tall order to be sure), the official title of 'World Champion' will have little status among the chess community.

Even amongst the chess elite there a very few million dollar opportunities that come your way.  It's easy to understand why even an unbalanced deal will at times be accepted. At the end of the day it all boils down to one thing - money.

Anand will kep his title by a .5 point thats my prediction.  i would pull a Fischer if i were Anand and demand neutral territory for the match.  im sure the political side of arranging this match is a nightmare, but FIDE should strive for some sort of fairness.

I like Anand's style of play, but there's no doubt in saying that he'll need to play carefully against Topalov in his home country.
