Tal Memorial - Round 1

Submitted by SonofPearl on Thu, 11/05/2009 at 11:46am.

There were no decisive results in the first round of the Tal Memorial in Moscow, but it was a close run thing in several games, notably the clash between Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

Despite Carlsen having the advantage of the white pieces, it was Kramnik who had the best winning chances, but Carlsen held on despite time trouble to draw a dramatic game.

Games start at 3pm local time again tomorrow (07:00 ET in the US) and coverage is available at the main site here.

All the first round games are below.

Morozevich got a lot of attack but Leko played played very accurately and it was a draw.

Leko had to play very carefully and he did! These GMs are very strong!

All games are drawn.

So far all the games except one are drawn.

1 game left to go, (Ponomariov vs Aronian), and 1 more queen check and its a perp check...

So as far as i can tell all the games are drawn (all agree'd to draw except 1 game)

Hi Krokodilizm,

may I ask, audaciously, where you get this knowledge from (quote: "Carlsen is certainly overrated."), wherefrom you get this quite superior position from which you denounce --- and please keep this in mind --- not only the juvenile but simply still utter elite chess player Magnus Carlsen (or so it seems, right?), but the whole very chess establishment?

And for contradiction of terms: quote: "You could sense he was a bit unsure in this match, which is explained by media focus and hostile slavic faces all around :)" Didn't you just maintain that he was "certainly overrated"? If so, why "hostile slavic faces", Krokodilizm? Wouldn't they just put a smile on --- as you just did?

Carlsen is certainly overrated. This public zoom on him is certainly distractive. Somebody mentioned football matches. I think Carlsen is like a football club playing on away grounds. You could sense he was a bit unsure in this match, which is explained by media focus and hostile slavic faces all around :)

Carlsen vs Aronian would be a thriller. I have seen them fight for a win in a dead rook endgame, so look forward for this match.

timdonegan, it does seem black's position is totally winning but it's actually not. White has perpetual in all the variations, Kramnik tried to step out of those (Ke6) but just couldn't. Carlsen played a very strong defense.

I saw a comparison of this first round to soccer games ending in both sides scoring equally.  I completely relate to this, since I've watched thrilling soccer games that end 4:4 or 3:3 (somewhat rare, but still) and those are so much better than many 1:0 wins.  So it's not just the end result that makes it exciting.

At least a couple of the games in this first round I would say resembled those 4:4 soccer draws.

I want to see at least one Najdorf or other tactical open game.  This is the Tal memorial.  He only played 1. d4 to throw people off!  He'd pretend to play positionally and then sacrifice his entire board for a win.

It seems that kramnik could have eventually won that game if he had kept going...he had a much better position

As for talk about chances to win, e.g. Carlsen vs Kramnik: the latter had his chances as had the former. Only, e.g., Carlsen and Kramnik can really discuss --- that very match---, iff it ever be discussion between the two. It is silly to comment here. One can try to analyze the match --- for ones own amatuerish purposes ---, but it is stupidity to come boasting around, pretending one understands the match better than the utter elite.

As for complaints about draws: try mount that groan in soccer, ice hockey, etc. If one doesn't get enough action, turn Hollywood right?

What is at Tal Memorial is the very best. If there are many draws it means that chess is all f.. well. And that these guys are incredible. That's all.

I watched part of the Carlsen-Kramnik..

I have to admit.. scary stuff, both sides made some mistakes, they both had winning chances then Carlsen ruined it and kramnik managed to get a winning chance.. but in the end Kramnik played it safe and drew?

I like Kramnik's move 45.

To theriverman: I think it would be a draw by repetition, since Boris did not want to sacrifice rook for rook, otherwise they would just move the rooks back and forth.
