Tal Memorial - Round 7

Submitted by SonofPearl on Thu, 11/12/2009 at 11:51pm.

Round 7 of the Tal Memorial was a quieter affair, with the games generally rather less inspiring than the tournament has been to date.

Nonetheless, there was a great fight between Ivanchuk and Gelfand, where the popular Ukranian came out on top.  Ivanchuk has taken to wearing a face mask while playing in recent rounds, in order to avoid catching the flu bug that is affecting some players, Carlsen in particular.

His decision to don a mask was understandably met with some mirth from his fellow competitors, but if it helps Chucky stay healthy and win, he will have the last laugh!  You gotta love Chucky! Laughing

Video footage below...

I think Fischer was the best chess player of all time and I'd say Kasparov would come second

The best part is that most studies point to masks only being effective for about 20-30 minutes (then your breath makes the mask wet enough to not be effective), so unless he brought a back-up mask he would have been fighting against the clock, both in chess and versus the flu!

@DJHeilke:

Maybe the booze actually helped Alekhine, not hindered him! And as a seasoned drunk, his system would have been accustomed to it...

Where do you get the fact about the 300 rating points for soberness from? Please provide a source. I'm sure much more depends on the degree of inebriation.

Capablanca had a plus record against Alekhine (!)

With all this talk of Kramnik winning when it mattered most, one has to wonder how chess history (up to and including this tournament!) would have transpired had Shirov been the one sitting across the board from Kasparov in 2000.

Illosis, you better check your facts as it looks like they are pretty much 50-50. Also I'll give the heads up to Kramnik, winning when it counted most (WCC).

Alekhine is the best of all time.  He played drunk 99% of the time, and still beat everyone in his day.  Alekhine is the only world champ to hold the title in his cold dead hands.  The only player to beat Alekhine when it mattered most was Death!

All other world champs have lost their title while still living.

So, I submit, with the following caveats:  Alekhine in his prime, and sober could beat any modern player....  (I base this assertion on the fact that being sober improves your rating by at least 300 pts, and Alekhine was at least a 2600 on today's scale; so a sober Alekhine would be around a 2900 player!)

Kasparov was VERY good in his time but chess moves on and there is no telling if he could compete with these guys unless he does.He has that chance to do that but it is his choice.

iliosis, more than 70% of the time? I don't know where you got that stuff, but that's not true. In fact it's ridiculously biased. Their overall stats against each other were very close, and it was Kramnik who won when it mattered the most.

you might be a Kasparov fan but that doesn't mean you can throw out incorrect information to support him. why don't you check the stats?

iliosis: If the comment is that Kasparov at his prime would have eaten these competitors alive then that is a less assailable statement.  But Kasparov now would likely struggle to beat Anand and Kramnik based on the fact he lost the last macth to Kramnik and that chess players usually don't improve after a certain age.

That mask has openings on the side so it is less effective than one that form fits to the face.Back to chess:Kramnik has the inside track to win now he plays Leko who has 2 losses and Ivanchuk a tough draw.61/2 pts out of 9

To jlueke: Correction, Kramnik beat Kasparov in the LAST tournament they have played together, however if you check the stats, Kasparov has beaten Kramnik more than 70% of the time in matches before that.

Masks don't help you from contracting disease, they do help to contain it, so really Carlsen should be wearing it if he has something that is contagious.

WGM Natalia, didn't Kramnik beat Kasparov? Wink

So why would he be eaten by an old man Tongue out

Smallville(GM) kibitzes: Kasparov would eat anyone alive

Smallville(GM) kibitzes: You underestimate just how strong Anand and Kramnik are
Smallville(GM) kibitzes: compared to everyone else

Totally agree with Naka, the US Champion knows what he's talking about.

It could be  away to influence the opponent. I remember the match Karpov-Kortchnoi with a different coloured portion of yogurt every day.

They both survived!

@staggerlee: It's better to wear whole surgical outfit: cap, gloves, etc. "The operation will be swist but painful.":)
