Tal Memorial - Round 4

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sun, 11/08/2009 at 12:53pm.

Vladimir Kramnik seems to have undergone a dramatic change in style at the Tal Memorial in Moscow!  In round four he scored another victory to take an undisputed lead going into the first and only rest day tomorrow.

Kramnik's victim was Peter Svidler, and the opening was Svidler's favourite Grunfeld, which now seems to be all the rage among the elite players.  Kramnik's response was a simple and brutal h-pawn rush which led to a deserved win.

If anyone is channeling the spirit of the great Mikhail Tal so far in this tournament, it's certainly Vladimir Kramnik.  Who would have guessed?  All the other games were drawn.

Reports suggest that Magnus Carslen is badly affected by a flu virus and he drew today with the white pieces against against Aronian.  Having said that, Kramnik is also said to be feeling poorly, but he seems to be taking it out on his opponents!

The standings after round four:

Kramnik, Vladimir   RUS   2772 3
Anand, Viswanathan  IND  2788
Aronian, Levon  ARM  2786
Carlsen, Magnus  NOR  2801 2
Ponomariov, Ruslan  UKR  2739 2
Gelfand, Boris  ISR  2758 2
Ivanchuk, Vassily  UKR  2739 2
Leko, Peter  HUN  2752
Morozevich, Alexander  RUS  2750
Svidler, Peter  RUS  2754 1

Monday is a rest day, so round five will be on Tuesday.  Official coverage here.

I don't agree with the view that Kramnik has gone through "a dramatic change in style," I think we need to see a lot of games with various openings to reach such judgement. His play was amazing in Dortmund too, and he didn't lose a game in the olympiad against very strong opposition right after the WC match. So far he just seems like the regular Kramnik, the best chess player in the world. (Oh have I mentioned I'm a huge Kramnik fan?)

it is great to see kramnik back in form.  maybe he wants to have one more crack at the world championship someday, so he figures he better start performing well in these tournaments in order to put himself towards the front of the line.

I am still surprised Topalov is not in the tournament.  But a thought just came to my mind:

After the WC 2006 loss to Kramnik, Topalov did an interview where he basically said that the Russians threatened him during the match, so he said he would never go to Russia again to play a tournament.  I do not know if he has been to Russia since that time, but that might be one explanation why he is not there...

To Omar: Svidler gave up because in this position he is forced to exchange rook for rook, after which he loses a pawn on b7, and his position is worse.

Hope that helps ;)

Iliosis, omar,

Note that the knight cant go anywhere after rook takes b7... nor can the rook leave the defence of the knight... because the bishop is eyeing it... if both rook and knight cant move then after a7  falls the knight is lost... The position was hopeless...With all these threats black wisely decided to resign...

Hope this helps more...

What is this dramatic change in style? As far as I can see Kramnik is just having a good tournament but his style is not changed.

Did Kramnik draw his way to 2800?
