Tiviakov Leads In Hoogeveen

Submitted by SonofPearl on Fri, 10/23/2009 at 12:16pm.

With just one round to go in the 13th Unive Tournament at Hoogeveen, in the Netherlands, the naturalised Dutch GM Sergei Tiviakov (pictured) is leading by half a point.

Actually, Tiviakov's victory against Judit Polgar in round four has been the only decisive game so far of this rather anticlimactic small double-round robin tournament.

The final round on Saturday pits Tiviakov against young Anish Giri, and Polgar against Ivanchuk.

Tiviakov, Sergei  2670 3.0
Ivanchuk, Vassily  2756 2.5
Giri, Anish  2552 2.5
Polgar, Judit  2687 2.0

The concurrent Open event also ends on Saturday, with English GM Stewart Haslinger leading the 60+ strong field on an impressive 7/8, a full point ahead of Dutch GM Friso Nijboer, who Haslinger defeated in round eight.  Among the chasing pack on 5.5/8 is Chess.com video author GM Josh Friedel.

Haslinger, Stewart  ENG  2529 7.0
Nijboer, Friso  NED  2540 6.0
Friedel, Joshua E  USA  2555 5.5
Ulibin, Mikhail  RUS  2533 5.5
Brodsky, Michail  UKR  2530 5.5
Romanishin, Oleg  UKR  2515 5.5
Kasparov, Sergey  BLR  2488 5.5
Gruenfeld, Yehuda  ISR  2474 5.5
Genov, Petar  BUL  2470 5.5
Riemersma, Li  NED  2431 5.5
Caspi, Israel  ISR  2404 5.5

Haslinger was so dominant! Nijboer made some moves that I don't think I would have made!Yell At this level, games should be more interesting. Wink

Not a very good advert for chess. The only decisive result is due to a blunder - 28...Re5?
