Topalov - Vallejo final at Dos Hermanas

Submitted by Masakari on Sun, 04/20/2008 at 9:03am.

The XIV International Rapidplay Chess Tournament in the Spanish city of Dos Hermanas, first reported on by our own SonofPearl, is now down to two. Veselin Topalov, the Bulgarian former World Champion, and Francisco Vallejo, the young Spanish GM, will play later today in the final. It can be watched live on the tournament website.

In the first round Vallejo eliminated Alexei Shirov with two wins and two draws. Topalo won his first two games against Judit Polgar, drew the third (enough to qualify for the final), but lost the forth game to the worlds strongest female player.

The second Shirov-Vallejo game was spectacular - if anyone thinks the Caro-Kann is always boring, get a load of this!
