Topalov Triumphant Against Kamsky

Cheer Up Topa, You Won!

So in the end it was asking too much of Kamsky to beat the world's top rated player, especially on his home patch in Bulgaria.

Kamsky tried the French defence again in Game 7, but fared no better than his previous loss in game 5.  Topalov played well to give Kamsky plenty of chances to slip up, and eventually, in time trouble yet again, he did just that.

So, it was a sad end to the match for Kamsky.  He showed flashes of inspiration and fighting spirit, but he was ultimately unable to cope with either his opponent or the clock.

Topalov ended up a convincing winner with a game to spare, and now earns the right to challenge Vishy Anand for the title of World Champion.  Although the qualifying 'cycle' (such as it is) is in chaos, it is fitting that Anand's first challenger for his undisputed title is the world's No.1 ranked player.

No arrangements have yet been made for the Anand-Topalov WCC match, but it is supposed to take place some time this year.  Please FIDE: Can we have at least a 16-game match this time please?  And a neutral venue would be nice...

Veselin Topalov BUL  2796  ½  1  ½  0 1  ½  1  .
Gata Kamsky USA  2725  ½  0  ½  1 0  ½  0 .

An emotional finish?  Kamsky gets something in his eye at the last press conference...

Sounds like an awesome match up : Vishy vs Topalov. But before that, I am also waiting for the new set of surprises from FIDE.

I agree on that but isnt still a good player virtue to know how to balance your time?30/40 min for a move? Coming this far and being unprepared for a move that was very away from the best move is weak...thats why Topa is better he can analyze a situation very fast and find the right and best way out of it...

You know, the only reason Topalov won Kamsky in the fifth round was due to time pressure. Same goes for the seventh round. If only Kamsky mastered his time control, things would've been different................

diskamyl - I'm not a nationalist I'm a patriot but I think there's no reason to argue for Kramnik...Topa proved to be better than him and got his "revenge" in the next few games...but you have to say that the discrimination for little countries like mine is something common not only in chess but everywhere in the sports world...but I am very happy that Vishi and Topa are on top now because they'll bring a whole new era for chess...

What a heartbreaking game for Kamsky who almost outplayed Topalov in middlegame. The superiority of Bulgarian did'tn shown in this game. Topalov just manage his clock advantage and played more smart than the American. Kamsky spent 30 minutes in his 24...Ba4. That move gave him only 10 minutes left to reach the first time control against Topalov almost 40 minutes! Topalov played wisely and simplified the game and successfully forced Kamsky to commit a mistake under time trouble. If Kamsky manage to convert his slight advantage to a win and level the match,it will give him the white pieces and momentum to beat the  world's top rated player in the next deciding game. Despite the loss,i still congratulate Kamsky for his fighting spirit to upset the overwhelming favorite Topalov. He did that feat 14 years ago against the present Champion Vishy Anand to win the 1995 FIDE Candidates Final Match to become Karpov's Challenger.  It's only a new beginning for Kamsky who's just making a very fast and amazing comeback in chess.(After his loss against Karpov in World Championship, young Kamsky retired to fullfill his dream to become a Lawyer). He's truly an inspiration for all young Chessplayer.  On the other side,Topalov's triumph gave the Chess World a new hope for another pound for pound World Championship after the Kasparov-Karpov Era. The Anand-Kramnik 2008 match is a one sided affair for the Indian. The upcoming  Anand-Topalov 2009 match is exciting.

    To diskamyl:

Topalov will have 2812 ELO on next FIDE lists, crossing 2800 barrier for the second time. That should tell all about GM Topalov value.Kamsky can be a tremendous player, but Topalov plays on another league.

    P.S don t you have a nationality?

I have read all the comments their seems to be a lot of opinions and patriotism in chess which I suppose is good I am always glad to see the best winning and who ever wins on the day is the best on that day at that moment in time. So weather your Bulgarian or American or where ever hats off to Topalov and he deserves to be congadulated chess is a psychological game as much as lines variations and mathematics and to win you have to use them all thats what separates wheat from the chaff.

What I can not understand is diskamyls view of what the world thinks of his country. He has obviously been brainwashed into believeing that everyone hates his country. God knows where such a negative attitude stems from but I can now understand with that attitude why wars happen. Just to let you know diskamyl the world does not hate you or your country many tourists go there from Ireland every year and have only good things to say about its people and culture  so it might be that you feel that way but the world does not and I am sure Most mature Bulgarians dont feel that way either .                             a son otrggw

Topa is a chess engine walking around in a humans body, though he is more imanginative than Karpov...at least Kamsky has some insiration in his games not just analysis

I don't know if Topalov is a nice guy or not, but the bottom line is Topalov is a better chess player than Kamsky. I think the match between him and Vishy will be very intertesting, possibly epic. Only problem is as some have pointed out it should be at least 16 games but I suspect as the older player by a few years Vishy might prefer the shorter distance and as the title holder he will have more say in the matter than the challenger. My prediction Vishy to retain title over 12 games but will lose over 16 or more. Anyway well done to Topalov and three cheers to Gata he played very well and made a real fight of it.

I am really proud with Topalov he's a great man for his country...I agree that this game was pretty bad both players made mistakes but we are all humans we're not perfect...it's the ability to get out of a bad situation and take advantage of your opponents mistakes that make a good chess player...so I think Topalov's place against Anand is well deserved...it will be a very interesting match they know one another very well , and are very good friends so I think sportsmanship will be the symbol of this WCC match

p.s exigentsky Topalov lies about Kramnik???What the F man the whole world knew that Kramnik lied except FIDE because you cant stand up for such a small country as Bulgaria and risk getting Russia pissed of at you!

[Zermelo]: "gabrielconroy says: "If Kamsky had played... 25.Kf7 (26. Rxe6 Qb3 27. Re1 Qa4, with advantage, GM Dimitrov)". What about 26.xe6 instead? It would be a check and Kamsky would be back to square, except with a threatened bishop. Bc8 sounds much better."

I'm not sure what you mean. 26. dxe6? That lets the queen into the defence, so the simple 26...Bxe6 wins the pawn with a strong position. 26. Qxe6 just loses the queen.

SonofPearl you don't have a case to answer and defend here, I dont see anything wrong with your report. The truth of the matter is that Kamsky lost and Topalov won the match. We should understand that what is crucial in Chess is to follow the rules and win. Of course Topalov missed out important moves/ lines here and there but he managed to come back, soldier on and win, whilst Kamsky was drown and sank.

I know it's difficult to accept that America's No. 1 is defeated. We appreciate Kamsky though, for winning the WCC cycle prevailing against the likes of Alexei Shirov, indeed it was a great achievement & such is life. We should not rule out that Topalov is the man of the moment!!! In this match his perfomance is 2827 only Garry Kasparov managed to surpus it.  In the last tournaments of the year 2008 we saw Topalov winning the SuperGM tournaments. Topalov is strong and his repertoire is much more wider than Kamsky's. Topalov is almost comfortable with every variation!!

All I can say is congrats Topalov and Anand watch out, this Bulgarian guy is upto something. This year India is gonna surrender the title to Bulgaria!!!

    Thank you guys!

Kamsky shouldn't be too disappointed. It's not like Fischer was up to bat or anything.

I was rooting for Kamsky (I didn't like Topalov's psychological tactics (lies) against Kramnik) but Topalov's victory is well-deserved.

I'm looking forward to this WCC match now! Topa v Vishy? Sounds like an epic to me. Vishy is past his prime, I think, and after the match, we're going to see a new World Champion emerge.
