Vassily Ivanchuk Robbed!

Vassily Ivanchuk is currently leading the standings at the half-way point of the Grand Slam Masters tournament in São Paulo, but as he left the hotel with his wife Oksana to take a taxi to the airport, they were robbed at gunpoint.

This shocking incident was bad enough in itself, but was compounded by the fact that one of the items that the thief took was Oksana's passport.

As a result the couple will have to split up, with Vassily flying to Bilbao for the second half of the tournament while his wife flies home to Ukraine to obtain a replacement passport to allow her to travel again.

Happier times...Vassily Ivanchuk and his wife Oksana

At first Vassily had reportedly talked of quitting the tournament if his wife was unable to travel to Bilbao with him, but it now seems that he will be arriving on Wednesday afternoon in Bilbao in time for the sixth round on Thursday, when he is due to play Hikaru Nakmaura.

Hopefully Vassily and his wife will recover fully from this unpleasant incident, and Vassily will be able to continue his great form in the tournament.

    @ zzgloo and all those who agrees with him. I said ehran because people over there are robbed everyday by the government, I am telling this because my best friend is from there, and I know he is right. If you blame other cities in the world to be unsafe you shoul dinclude your city as well. I know government have been robbing ppl form their basic human right since 1979. So, a barzilian friend who blamed me as a bad apple, please look into your city first before you clain anything else; I am not claiming any city in the US to be the safest, but the probability of being robbed right before getting into the cab in front of the taxi in US is miniscule. That is my point. So no hard feeling. I love Brazil for their Samba, and Iran for their history and civilization, But just dont avoid the reality when you talk about modern safety. So Romans, Greeks, and any other civilization wont help in Chuky being robbed.

    That is all folks.

    Don't bother to answer, zzgloo, "they" think they know everything (though are completely clueless about other countries), not to mention "they" think they are the "BEST".

    Well, the Greek were like that, then the Romans were, and so on...

    Don't get me wrong, the "they" I mentioned above are not ALL of them, I lived in USA, worked and married there, there are plenty of good people there (like everywhere else around the globe), but no doubt there's a lot of misguided souls there too...

    Believe it or not...Tehran is a very safe city.....among the safest......they government control, and religouse police are so strong...the punishements are so harsh...no body even thinks about doing anything wrong.

    Eccentric character

    GM Ivanchuk

    TRIVIA

    "Chucky", as Ivanchuk is called, has been described by Viswanathan Anand as the most eccentric player in the chess world. Anand, tongue-in-cheek, gave his view on Ivanchuk like this:[13]

    He's someone who is very intelligent ... but you never know which mood he is going to be in. Some days he will treat you like his long-lost brother. The next day he ignores you completely.
    The players have a word for him. They say he lives on 'Planet Ivanchuk'. (Laughs) ... I have seen him totally drunk and singing Ukrainian poetry and then the next day I have seen him give an impressive talk.

    Just wondering though, how can you be robbed in between the hotel and the taxi...that is usually a short walk...

    There are far too many cities worse than Sao paulo:

     Mexico city,Baghdad,East LA,Moscow,for example....

    @Vjalves

    are you nuts?

    "You have at least 50% probability to be robbed in São Paulo and 70% in Rio deJaneiro if you stand there for 2 weeks, it is very normal."

    @njhan1

    ignorant is someone who takes some stupid statistics out of his own mind. It is not an isolated case. But, what I am saying is that is happens everywhere... so mind your own country, it already has a lot of problem.

    Unfortunate and quite stressful to have to deal with such a thing. Hopefully he can regain his peace of mind and concentration.
