Vote Chess

Submitted by zombywoof on Mon, 11/24/2008 at 12:16pm.

Many people are still missing the concept of vote chess.  It is not just to look at the board and cast your vote......  The idea is to communicate with YOUR team, why you want to vote on a move, and either get others to agree with your choice, or encourage them to show you why their choice is better......  At the very least, just read the team comments people are making about your move choice and other potential moves.  Please wait until the last possible moment in your schedule to actually cast your vote..... You will often find that where you anticipated moving, is not where you would have moved had you thought about it more.....  I know we have all made moves in our individual games that we wish we would not have made upon further reflection.  Perhaps, by playing vote chess we can improve our individual chess vision so we make better decisions in our own games.

Remember, vote chess is played as a team game.  If you are not planning on reading and/or participating in the team comments, why bother being on a vote chess team?  Just play your individual games, and/or participate in our team match play tournaments where you alone are playing the game and matching wits with your opponent......  However, play vote chess in order to learn why others that see the same board you are seeing, will make different decisions.....

Vote Chess is an opportunity to help each other improve their individual game, while we play and try to win together as a team.  I hope more people in our group will try some vote chess games, think as a team, and see how rewarding and fun it can be.

I have been in groups where the admin tells everyone what to vote..

I think that's silly, it's a game. I like playing it normally,..I do like the concept of using it for tutorials and have someone >2300..advising and questioning some of the moves..(as a teaching aid only)

Thank you Obi-wan ZombyWoof.  I have been asking for an explanation of how to play and learn in votechess and you are the first and only one I've seen to give a good answer.

Exactly, zombywoof. I mean, you can put your ideas down, but I think it should be more of a pick what you want, and everyone else can see what you picked.

agreed.... I think it is time to petition the site for a non anonymous vote chess option ......  Town meeting, hand raising style   ---- it may be more appealing to those of us interested in using vc as a learning tool......

If there was a vote chess, and everyone would write down what they want to do, then it would be easier to communicate. Otherwise it does just turn into random votes.

I am taking the liberty of copying some give and take in a current votechess game (Philosophers vs Win or lose on your own) we are in as we get ready to make our 2nd move. (Nane, I trust you won't mind).  It is safe to say that the openings that we end up using will never please everyone, and often dictates that the game as it progresses will be outside our comfort zone, but we can all be vocal and have fun!  Please keep in mind that nane and I are the 1st two team members to express our move choice, I have no idea the direction we will be going when more team members weigh in, but my seatbelt is fastened in preparation for an exciting ride, wherever we end up going.   The following is my response to Nane's comment....see below.... and feel free to join the team at any time or just observe!

Nane this is a thought I suspect we have all had at one time or another when playing voteches.....  While this is an opening I have been using for the last 6 weeks......  My next move (g6)will certainly not be one that others will likely wish to do.....  yet, all that is cool.  That is what makes votechess interesting;  playing from openings and/or positions unfamiliar or different than our norm.  The question is whether we can gain something individually for our game by doing so.  We can go and research the variety of alternatives from the Q bishop opening and pick one we individually like; suggest it and justify it, or rely on a team consensus and go where it takes us.  Nevertheless, playing out of our individual comfort zone and seeing it develop into a viable strategy, offers insight that should add depth to our own game.   So stay with us and continue to give voice to your game, and know you are not alone!

I am not much into it this openings and other stuff. To be honest,I play the way I think only, and according to this I would suggest a move I would do in an ordinary game of mine.I dont know whether it is like that in this opening(as I said i dont know them),but it is the optimum move for me.

burch, the evaluation and move/submit button works the same as your regular games.....the only difference is that you have a team to discuss the move with.....  so.....  following your evaluation, comment regarding your move you deem worthwhile and read others comments about their desired moves and/or yours....  then you can submit your move after some give and take (preferably as close to the deadline as possible for you) and that becomes your "vote" .  the votes of all members are tallied and the move with the most votes becomes the actual move.  One other difference in votechess is that you can join the team of a game already in progress, so try it and have fun with it!
