That is a good word! There was a song back in the 70's about troglodytes - "her name was Bertha, Bertha Butt, she was one of the Butt sisters" or was that "Spill the Wine"? Hmmm... One of those two...
stuff being a sick American man! seems you're f*cked if you get ill! civilised eh? looking after the sick goes way back to when we were troglodytes (cave dwellers, its just a word i love). both our governments are heavily flawed but that is a sad state of affairs! us humans have so much evolving to do!
Actually, I'm not really sure what, if anything, this 'universal health care' would cover if it ever passes (it's still only being talked about in Congress, as it has been since 1912 - yep, it's been an election year platform since then!) Call me crazy, but I just assume that a government that can't even govern itself will have trouble handling health care for 300 million people! An example of our current fabulous insurance coverage - when that mosquito bit me a few years ago and I ended up in the hospital for a week with Neuroinvasive West Nile Encephalitis (there's a mouthful!), I think it cost us around $7,000 on top of whatever the insurance company paid! Of course there are many, many different plans, some better, some worse, but the insurance our company offers isn't so good, and we get to pay $200 or $300 a month to have it! On top of that, prescriptions are $20 to $45 each, depending on what you're getting...
see thats the fundamental difference, whether your on benefits and out of work or are a millionaire, you get free healthcare, ok only the working tax payers are paying for it (its deducted from our wage before we get it) but at least they benefit from it too. i know iv probably received more in health care than iv paid and iv never been out of work, but a few operations and medication is expensive. but completely free, well, actually thats a lil lie, we pay £4.50 for any prescription if you're working. but thats regardless of how expensive the meds actually are. the government pays the rest to the pharmaceutical companies. and if its an ongoing prescription you can pay i think £15 and that will cover all meds for each quarter year. so am i right in thinking then that you still need private insurance even thoguh your paying money to the health service? thats f*cked! although i believe thats the way our health service started so there was some money put into it, then it expanded to cover everyone.
great flanders quote. bless his wee innocent heart hah. just laughing there, in the film just as their about to all die he turns to his son and says "i wish you were'nt born with the devils curly hair" lol, first time i think hes been nasty!
Nah, we still pay for insurance through payroll deductions. The 'free health care' that Obama is pushing will only apply to the same people collecting welfare, and the rest of us will continue to pay for them. One of my all time favorite Simpsons quotes was from Ned Flanders, when his son asked what taxes are for. He said something like, "well sir, they pay for the sun and the trees, and for the people who just don't want to work, God bless 'em!" SO TRUE!
cheers for sharing that Ron, tell me this, now that you guys are paying more in taxes etc, are you getting full free health care yet in return or any other major benefits? see, we pay a sh*t load in taxes and life is more expensive here than in the states, but any terminal illness or continual medication can be got for nothing or very little (pennies) as we pay around 10% of our wage to healthcare. I know that a terminal or ongoing illness basically means bankruptcy or "live with it" was the way of it in the states in the past. has this changed any or do you still need to buy health insurance? the only thing we need to pay for is dental care unless your unemployed or bold enough just to say your unemployed...um, id never do that
That's a big 10-4, and that's coming from a Yank! It's all about "what's in it for me?". Saving the Iraqi people? What about the North Koreans? Or the Somalians? Oh yeah, they're 'next in line'... The last prez was a joke, and the current prez is the same. The only difference between the Democrats and Republicans is that the Dems hurt my paychek more with all their government programs, therefore I'm an embarrassed Republican simply for selfish reasons!
the last war i know of that was for that purpose and not only using peace and god as an excuse was defending ourselves against the nazi's. the major wars britain and america have been involved in since, vietnam, the falklands (joke, that was just shelling the shit out of people for wanting to call their bit of land something we didnt want them too), the gulf, afghanistan to name but a few have been nothing more than sending our boys n girls out to die for nothing more than lies.
Teja
Well, there are some who say war is needed to win the peace .
Absolutely nothin' (say it again)
