World Cup Final - Game 3

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sat, 12/12/2009 at 9:35am.

Game three of the 2009 World Cup Final between Ruslan Ponomariov and Boris Gelfand was also drawn, but was at least was more of a genuine contest than game two.

Ponomariov avoided another Petroff by trying 1. d4 instead, and the players left opening theory relatively early in the game.  Gelfand looked to be in some trouble when he lost a pawn, but Ponomariov couldn't see a clear way to exploit his advantage and allowed a repetition of moves.

With just one regular time-control game left in this final match, neither player seems willing to take undue risks after such a long tournament...

Feeling the heat? Boris Gelfand in deep thought during game three. Pic from the official site.
