World Cup Reaches Round 4

Submitted by SonofPearl on Mon, 11/30/2009 at 10:07am.

The 2009 Chess World Cup reaches the fourth round today, with the 16 remaining players fighting for a place in the quarter-finals.

There have been some high-profile casualties along the way but many of the big-hitters still remain, including top seed Boris Gelfand (pictured), who knocked out the last surviving female player, Judit Polgar on tiebreaks in round three.

Both remaining Chinese competitors were also eliminated in round three, but neither helped their cause by losing the second of their rapid tie-break games by default after failing to turn up in time for the start of their game.  They were busy smoking and were two minutes late!  FIDE's new rules indicate an automatic default if a player is not seated and ready to play at the start of a game...

The first games of round four have now been completed, and the tension is clearly rising, with only two decisive results today.  Peter Svidler and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov both won their games with the black pieces, putting them in a very strong position going into game two.

The two junior players still remaining, Fabiano Caruana (aged 17) and Wesley So (aged 16) both drew their games today.

Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime FRA ½-½ Gelfand, Boris ISR
Gashimov, Vugar AZE ½-½ Caruana, Fabiano ITA
Shirov, Alexei ESP 0-1 Svidler, Peter RUS
Laznicka, Viktor CZE 0-1 Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar AZE
Karjakin, Sergey UKR ½-½ Vitiugov, Nikita RUS
So, Wesley PHI ½-½ Malakhov, Vladimir RUS
Bacrot, Etienne FRA ½-½ Ponomariov, Ruslan UKR
Grischuk, Alexander RUS ½-½ Jakovenko, Dmitry RUS

@ iliosis - the players play two regular time control games first.  If they are still level, then they play a rapid match of up to 4 games.  If they are still level, then they play up to 5 pairs of blitz games (if they are level after a pair of games, they play another pair).

And finally, if they are still level after 5 pairs of blitz games (the score would be 8-8 by now), there is a final sudden-death game, where White gets 6 minutes to Black's 5 minutes, but White HAS to win.  A draw would put Black through.

We haven't needed the sudden death game so far.  The nearest time was a match that ended 9-7! Surprised

I think Wesly So's got little time left in his clock....he's position is better than that of Malakhov. Im not a fide master... only played money games,,, but based on my experience,,, I won many times with a horse during endgames... Anyway there is game 2,, I pray,, believe,, SO can sustain his momentom. He played excellent chess using black so far....Just keep cool and calm Wesly,,...

draw..... i think horse is a little better than bishop at endgames. GM Malakhov escaped the upset axe.. he played for a draw and he was successful... very awesome calculation...mybe he still has lot time left in his clock....ok nice game SO and Malakhov,,, CARdiac Game.

Awesome GM players play!  Wesley!  What happened?  Why were you not in your element?  Continue thought-provoking games!  It's good for chess!  Unorthodox is progress!  No guts!  No glory!  So, they say!  Anticipate, anticipate and anticipate!  May the force be with you!!!

Also, So is admirable. I've seen many Filipino chess players on this site waiting for someone to finally represent their country as a leader in the chess world (and who can blame them when one of their last world chess leaders was the controversial Campomanes?).

Really appreciate the updates on the Cup. Fascinating interviews and the games are quite interesting. I was looking at the tournament pics and was disappointed to see the US flag was improperly displayed. I am sure it was not intentional, and probably no one else cares, but it is too bad that no one knew better.
