Wei Yi.jpgA 13-year old Chinese player Wei Yi (pictured) has qualified to become the youngest Grandmaster in the world!

Wei Yi is currently sharing the lead at the Reykjavik Open with a score of 6½/8, which is already a strong enough performance to earn his third and final GM norm.

Since Wei Yi's current rating is 2501 Elo, he has passed the minimum rating criteria of 2500.  His latest scalp was French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in round eight in Reykjavik (see below).

At 13 years, 8 months and 23 days old, Wei Yi is currently the youngest GM (elect) in the world, and the fourth youngest player ever to become a Grandmaster!

If Wei Yi is thrteen years of age, then, I will be the oldest to become a grandmaster and ...the earliest to retire. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Seriously, congratulation Wei Yi and may you continue to progress young man.

@ Kenji12 - good spot. Sergey Karjakin swapped federations from Ukraine to Russia a while back, so I've amended the list to reflect that.

In a youth-obsessed (mostly) Western culture, many news are about the youngest this-or-that, but few are about honoring age at the other end.  I wonder what that list would look like if one inquired about the oldest active and still qualifying (i.e., still rated >2500) grandmasters of the world.

In some sense, it's easy (easier) to get there young if you start very young and have talent.  On the other hand, very different qualities would be needed for sustaining such a top form in chess for the oldest...

I know GM Viktor Korchnoi would be close to the top on that list (both for hig age and for his rating among old GMs)...  (W)GM Nona Gaprindashvili would also be on the corresponding women's list...

I like to see all those doubts from others. That only shows Chinese are now stronger than in past to make people jealous

For some reason, I always doubt chinese alleged age.  He looks 15 or 16 years old.  I am from the Dominican republic and we also have a bad reputation in that area of age on our athletes.

its unfair to compare when its title havnt pass through fide congress, and those already confirmed are, so their date is later. its also unfair to show this instead of many brillance game played, like Vachier-Lagrave vs So and Cheparinov vs Eljanov.
