Yuri Averbakh Turns 90 Today

Yuri Lvovich Averbakh was born in Kaluga, Russia on 8 February 1922. He became a Grandmaster in 1952, competed in the legendary 1953 Zurich Candidates tournament, and won the USSR Chess Championship in 1954.

In a long and successful chess career, Yuri Averbakh was a noted endgame theoretician composing more than 100 chess studies. He is also a celebrated chess writer, authoring many bestselling chess books, and editing top Russian chess magazines.

At 90 years of age Yuri Averbakh is the oldest living Grandmaster and a true legend!

    The ending of the game against Efim Geller was spectacular, particularly from move 41 onward.  Averbach could have won the game in many ways, but he chose an eye-catching sacrificial route -- a rarity in endgames, and possibly the fastest win in the current position, too.  

    Being a rook down on material (due to an earlier sacrifice), he sacrificed the second rook!  (The prosaic 46...c2 would have won too, but much slower.)

    I still believe his Chess Endings: Essential Knowledge is the best quick primer on the endgame ever.  He was also an innovator in the openings as well.
