Zurich Chess Challenge 2013

World Champion Vishy Anand aims to repeat his recent success in the Grenke Chess Classic in Baden-Baden when he takes part in the Zurich Chess Challenge 2013 from 23 Feb - 1 March.

The Zurich tournament is a 4-player double round-robin featuring Vishy Anand, world #2 ranked Vladimir Kramnik, Fabiano Caruana and Boris Gelfand.

Name Fed Elo
Vladimir Kramnik RUS 2810
Viswanathan Anand IND 2780
Fabiano Caruana ITA 2757
Boris Gelfand ISR 2740

The time control will be 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes plus a 30-second increment for the remainder of the game. If a game is drawn before move 40, the players involved will play an additional rapid exhibition game (not counting towards the tournament score).

Although the line-up is smaller than in Baden-Baden, it is also stronger and the choice of players is fascinating: Kramnik and Gelfand have both lost world championship matches to Anand, and Caruana only just lost out to the champion in the recent Grenke Chess Classic.

Playing Schedule (times = GMT+1)

Sat Feb-23 15:00 Round 1
Sun Feb-24 15:00 Round 2
Mon Feb-25 15:00 Round 3
Tue Feb-26 Rest Day
Wed Feb-27 15:00 Round 4
Thu Feb-28 15:00 Round 5
Fri Mar-01 13:00 Round 6

The tournament is being staged by the Zurich Chess Club and the main sponsor is Oleg Skvortsov of International Gemological Laboratories.  The venue will be the Savoy Hotel, Paradeplatz.

The 2013 Zurich tournament marks the sixtieth anniversary of the legendary 1953 Candidates Tournament, won by Vassily Smyslov.

Anand is my favourite player. All of them are good players, so exciting battles can be seen.

This is a super tournament - i definitely prefer the double round robin format.

Expect Kramnik to win. Will be interesting to see if Anand can score some wins

the 'real fight' is going to be between only two guys  ---kramnik and anand....I wud have loved to have Aronian and Carlsen instead of Gelfand and Caruana....then it wud have been the freaking strongest tournament in its entire history and also very exciting to watch :)

Kramnik and Gelfand are competing in the Candidates' tournament next month, the winner is the challenger to Anand in the fall.  So they may not be able to show all their preparation for that tournament.

Anand wishes to continue his success in tournaments, and Caruana needs to continue his comeback after the disaster at Tata.

The other three look like they're thinking about what move to play next, like proper chess players. Kramnik looks like he's plotting Global Domination. Can't wait to see him return

    Where the heck is Carlsen??

But this will be a great tournament! I do have to say that I want Kramnik to win, since I admire and have studied his games.
Caruana would be my next pick to win because I'm a fan of underdogs :) And he, as far as experience goes.

    Will definitely be following this.

_valentin_: let's not forget Karjakin, who's less than a year older than Carlsen.

according to me  this is the best oppurtunity for anand to prove that he is still the real champion this is going to be a very fascinating tournament because no player is weak here if any player will acquire two victory than he may be the winner of the tournament but anand and caruana playing continously so they will be exhausted whereas gelfand and kramnik is playing after a considerable gap so they r fresh now i cant wait for tommorrow
