In thsi position as shown... white generally plays f4.. It looks very aggressive but it's actually somewhat weakening and gives your retarded (by choice) central pawns targets waiting for the proper moment to stricke

so, after f4, black sould play Nf6 for a number of good reasons... black must be READY to castle...even if he does not.. which happens more often than you can imagie.

Now generally, white will play Nf3, then I belive balcks best is c6!   I play this move over and over and get great results; first, it discourages queen side castling because of the threat of b5 and 5... leaving whites e4 weakend and the white Kt has no really good square to flee to.  If white counters with a3 or a4.. black can work up tremendous play on the queens wing... observe the black's white square bishop is already on duty without moving...  Also not the seemingly strong e5!? by white is met with de5!! and the pinned d pawn can be problematic..especially if the knight can be chase away.  ALSO not the the black night has g4 available as a flight square, which opens up blacks king bishops diagonal and doubles the attack on e5... which can be doubled again by the queen night on d7 and the Queen on C7  (another good reason to make c6 move early on... it opens the queens diagonal and both b5 and a5 can be powerful squares for her!!

IF white tries to steam-roll your position.. relax, and analyze.. there IS a strong answer there... every time...  When I lose it somehow... it's really quite easy to go over your game and aay to selff "WHAT was I THINKING????)  And of course you see a far better move with little effort.

L@@K for opportunites as well as DANGERS.. posed by a multitude of double attacks, pinned panws that you can take big advantage of... discovered checks ...the works... and BOTH side will have their chances... if you snooze... you loose!!

:D

good move ppl...

Paz y mas,

THERE ARE MANY possible variations... and this game is indeed razon sharp.  I feel black enjoys beter development because the bihop can be deplyed to b2 or pin at g4...  and the bishhop which is usually "bad" in most variations for black... trading it for a powerful attacking piece on the king-side is not a bad idea.

On a final note... the king does not stand poorly ion c7 if the cetral events result in a white initiated queen trade...

THIS opening is only limited by your own "imagination" ... or lack thereof.  Uncareful play will allow white to call the tune.. for a long time..

The "statistics" are based on all "reported" games.... in practical OTB application, the modern is a very viable and DANGEROUS defense for white to battle... It can EASILY morph into a kings indian, grunfeld, or even a Sicilian Dragon depending on whites reaction...

In my EXTENSIVE exporation of the modern/pirc opening system; I have found that my successes FAR EXCEED my failures...

...the only "caveat" I have for using this system is that you MUST be hyper-vigilant for the correct time to exercise a pawn break in the middle... to ignore this reality is to INVITE a pawn storm on a cramped position... which of course, is not a desirable outcome.

d5 or e5 at the proper moment are essential equalizers at some point in the fight for the center.... only, YOU get to choose when you make that irretrievable pawn push!!

In the recorded anals of the defense, it does not enjoy the success it deserves... I would hesitate to use it against a strong expert or a master... but let's face it... that's rarified air and I only get an occasional exposure to that caliber player OTB... being an A class OTB player at the moment...

I played in my first OTB tourney in almost 20 yrs last week... I did very well as long as the clock was not pushing me... the CLOCK is an evil equalizer!!  ...saddly, I need to get back in touch w/ real-time chess...  this move based allows you too much time and freedom to research and analyze and that can become a CRUTCH for a player....

OTB... doesn't ALLOW crutches... get OUT THERE and PLAY...

BE STRONG... don't just THINK strong...

There's no way to say that this'll be the exact opening, but if black played it differently, look out.  It could be devastating.

I recommend at this point that you sacrifice your queen to his bishop.  That way, he'll think you're crazy and inconsistent, which will ultimately give you the edge.  Doesn't seem to work against the computer very well though.  :/
