    6...d5 is basically a mistake- 6...Nc5 is the right move, and the reason white prefers 6.d4 to 6.Re1.

    After something simple like 6...d5 7.Bxc6+ bc6 8.d3 Black's position is simply bad.

    White actually hasn't lost a pawn: for example, he can take on e5, and gain it right back.  He then has a good bit of pressure on c6 knight, although the position does get very tactical quickly. 

    Alternatively, he could play Bxc6+, followed d3, or just d3 right now.  After 7. Bxc6+, bxc6 8. d3, white will regain the pawn with Nxe5, with threats of Nxc6+, and other nastiness.  White will then have the better pawn structure and some initiative, but Black will have the bishop pair, and an open b file to work on.
