Chicago Basin, The La Platas
This is a trip I recently took with four friends of mine into the Chicago Basin, where we summited both Sunlight and Windom peaks in a single day. We took the Durango-Silverton rail and was dropped off over 70 miles from the nearest road into the beautiful Weminuche Wilderness near Durango Colorado.
The Durango-Silverton Rail is one of three (I believe) working steam engines left in the U.S that is from the 1800's. So the ride to our destination was truely unique. The train literally carves its way through the town of Durango as it does the Weminuche Wilderness.
Overall the trip took four days total.
Day 1: 4 hour train ride to Needleton Creek. 8 mile hike from creek to base camp taking 5 hours.
Day 2: Trek 2 miles from basecamp to the valley where both Sunlight and Windom peaks stand. (Both peaks are over 14,000 ft. in height. Our basecamp sat at about 12,000 ft. We started our trek at around 10,000 ft., where the train dropped us off at the creek.)
Day 3: Hiked around the valley taking in the flora and fauna.
Day 4: Day 1 in reverse.
Oddly enough, I was reading through a Backpacking magazine and they had this exact trip laid out. It was odd to me because I figured this area was a little known secret in Colorado and the four corners area. But rarely does anything of beauty stay hidden for long.
