Chess in the Park

Lunchtime chess in Sydney's Hyde Park always draws a crowd to watch, and often some very strong players.

It can also draw a fair number of pigeons and seagulls. I remember once watching with a friend, Richard Phillipps (an ABC journo at the time, later associate professor at Bond University) when a seagull decided to use his head for target practise.  Yuk!  Richard didn't seem all that pleased but the rest of us laughed.

Once, when I was playing on the big board, my opponent sprinted away across the park, decked a guy, picked up the briefcase the man had just stolen, and came back to finish the game.  If the man had stolen it when it had been my opponent's move he might not have been seen.

I take my baby there to watch in the hope that she'll pick it up faster than me.

If you are looking to have a casual game at the park it is a good idea to take your own chess board. There is never a shortage of opponents to play.

If you are wanting to play on the giant board, there is normally a bit of a wait especially around lunchtime! (the busiest time in the park)
