On January 8th, 2011 52 young chess players participated in the West Des Moines Youth Trophy Tournament at the St. Francis of Assisis chool careteria. The 25 player youth Trophy section was won by Jaleb Jay (Poketo on chess.com) of Marshalltown with a 5-0 record with Kristian Stevens, Frank Li, Nicholas Lueng, and Mina Takahashi rounding out the top 5. The 27 player unrated section was won by Mary Ann Czizek with a 5-0 performance. Andrew Ehler and Nicholas Seymour finished equal 2nd and 3rd with 4-1 records. 4th and 5th were shared at 3.5-1.5 by Sunita Kolateth and Mathew Hintz.

A parents and friends section was also held. 12 players competed and bragging rights were won by St. Francis chess coach Jim Mona with 3 straight wins after a round 1 bye. Jim had a busy day. He missed the first round to coach his son's AAU basketball game, won the chess tournament, and ended the day helping clean up after the tournament by mopping the caferia floor.
