A wee Sparrow chick!

Submitted by Pistoleer on Wed, 06/11/2008 at 3:40pm.

A few of ye know ive been trying to keep alive a wee sparrow chick fer the last 5 days or so.;. well here is a pic or two! It is the cutest wee thing..but i fear that my savin it from death (one o my cats brought it in and there is no nest nearnby) that it may become too tame and not be able to fdend fer itself when it can fly in a few days hopefully and i can let it go.

When i found it it had almost no feathers, just falled out of a nest. Ive fed him every 45 mins or so and it has really come on strong in the last day or so and i fear to think it will actually make it! Its been an incredible experience as well as a tough one heh. (4 other chicks my cat has brought in have died..)

So fingers crossed!

Fingers corrsed )(shorryu beeen rdrinkgin again) it will make it ok... :)

Nice story Tim.

We have sparrows in Oz of course but we also have kookaburras. You'd get along well with the kookas ... like yourself, they laugh a lot.

In 1985 my son, Neil, found one that had fallen from its nest. We rang the Parks and Wildlife people and they told us to keep it for a bit, and gave some information about caring for it.

What they didn't tell Neil to do was to give it rides on his remote-controlled car. It was content to sit on the thing as he steered it around our back patio but every time he stopped it would flap it's wings, wanting him to keep going.

Here's a pic of Neil and the kookaburra. (The kooka is the one on the car.)

BTW, if you read "Hang Gliding and the KID" in my blog

there's another picture of Neil, but this time he's got wings of his own.

lol :P Cheers all ye guys, going to make me get all emotional ;S

An update is that it (no idea if its a guy or gal, but its so demanding that i reckon it must be a girl ;)  seems to be doing really well. Feathers have all developed now and it is easting so much heh.

I bring it outside to try and get it to fly but it still can only flutter a short distance and even then only when i throw it in the air gently heh. I fear it is not going to want to leave... :s  Also not sure how long it should be being fed like a chick and not by finding its own food.

Im going away in 2 days so going to have to try and release it and hope fer the best then either way..
